India protests: PM Modi defends citizenship bill amid clashes

Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused opposition parties of spreading misinformation about the bill

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has defended the government's new citizenship law, despite the major ongoing protests against it.

"We passed this bill to help the persecuted," he said at a rally in Delhi. "We need to respect India's MPs and its parliament".

More than 20 people have died in ten days of clashes sparked by the bill, which critics see as anti-Muslim.

Protesters have continued to take to the streets in spite of police bans.

Several thousand people have also been detained and internet services have been suspended as the authorities battle to restore order.

The bill offers amnesty to non-Muslim illegal immigrants from three neighbouring countries.

Mr Modi defended the legislation at a rally in the capital at the start of his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) campaign for state elections there. The prime minister:
  • Accused political parties of "telling lies and spreading misinformation" about the bill
  • Condemned attacks on the police as well as on public transport, shops and government property
  • Maintained that the government had "never asked for anyone's religion" when implementing major policies
  • Insisted that India's Muslims - one in seven of India's 1.35bn population - "don't need to worry" about the bill
What is the controversial law?
Critics fear the new law - known as the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) - undermines India's secular constitution.

Passed earlier this month, it offers amnesty to non-Muslim illegal immigrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

The federal government says the law will protect religious minorities fleeing persecution - but the move has drawn criticism from opposition parties and international rights groups.

It is also controversial because it follows a government plan to publish a nationwide register of citizens that it says will identify illegal immigrants - namely, anyone who doesn't have the documents to prove that their ancestors lived in India.

A National Register of Citizens (NRC) - published in the north-eastern state of Assam - saw 1.9 million people effectively made stateless.
The NRC and the Citizenship Amendment Act are closely linked as the latter will protect non-Muslims who are excluded from the register and face the threat of deportation or internment.

Why are people protesting against it?
The law change has sparked a backlash from a range of protesters, including students.

Many Muslim citizens fear that they could be made stateless if they don't have the necessary documents; and critics also say the law is exclusionary and violates the secular principles enshrined in India's constitution.

But Mr Modi said the law would have "no effect on citizens of India, including Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Jains, Christians and Buddhists".

He also blamed the opposition for the protests, accusing them of "spreading lies and rumours" and "instigating violence" and "creating an atmosphere of illusion and falsehood".

First of all you changed the subject... @waz ..I beleive, it is not allowed to change the subject of any thread from original measage.

Any way, it is a good move..Political leaders should listen to their people..India do not need any kind of bill to justify citizenship outside Assam. Govt should withdraw it.

India elected Modi because the Congress was seen as extremely corrupt - from 2G, 3G, Commonwealth Games - there was sphere in which the Congress wasn't siphoning off money.

Fair enough, and that is the sovereign right of Indian citizens to vote for any political party they want. Personally, if i was an Indian Hindu, i would probably vote for Modi as well.

When I say no one - except your staunchest allies - i.e. China and perhaps 1 or 2 Islamic nations, literally no one buys your line. That is just a fact.

That is not a fact because Nation States buy whatever narrative that suits their own agenda. Case in point, the US(Sole Superpower) accepts Pakistan's narrative when it suits her agenda, and vice versa for India as well.

I agree most Indians online are now completely retarded and go around spewing hatred against Muslims and Pakistanis - not to mention they go on circulating conspiracy theories about Nehru being a Muslim and what not. The general population was always ignorant and now with social media their ignorance is multiplied with arrogance and stupidity.

From what i can see, the hatred/venom seems to be reflecting on the ground as well. I have always found Indian Muslims in general except for Kashmiris to be quite patriotic about India. That seems to be changing from what i can see.

But there is a large section of Indian people who speak up against Modi , against bigotry. BJP got 230 million votes in the last election and the Congress despite its leadership vacuum got 120 million. That's a significant percentage of people against Modi.

I don't think anybody denies this as India is certainly a very educated and vibrant country. Our in-house legend @Joe Shearer has constantly spoken against the divisiveness of Modi and BJP, and the same message appears to be echoing from the intelligentsia in India. But what matters is that who is sitting in the Political Office, and looking at the Political System of India, the Central Government holds enormous power over the conduct of the country.

The picture of Abhinandan tells the story of a pilot who did his job. I am sure if on the previous day a Pak pilot had dared to cross the LoC and enter India and if he had been shot down, he too would have been seen as a hero by Pak.

No doubt, but you forgot to explain the other part of the picture. For the past 15 years all i have heard is how MIGHTY the Indian Air Force is, and how IAF will totally annihilate the PAF if things heated up. I was told even the MIG21 Bisons were enough to run through PAF's heavy hitters. To see that narrative fall apart was very satisfying for Pakistanis.

The whole world is leaning right and India is no exception. I hope it is a passing phase because having numbers in Parliament is not the only criteria in a democracy.

True very true, Imran Khan and his party would be considered on the Right as well.

Goes to show civil society in India can stand up when needed. No one denies that persecuted minorities from Pak, BD and Afghanistan need to be given political refuge and a path to citizenship. But any law which is religion based violates the secular tenets of the Constitution - and I understand there is a counter legal argument to that too. But it was protesting against Congress which led to downfall of Congress - the same will eventually happen to BJP.

Where is the evidence that minorities are being persecuted in Pakistan?

@waz @The Eagle @Dubious @Horus @WAJsal @Irfan Baloch

I am surprised to hear that about the IAF. I've personally only heard the Army lionized. The IAF has always been the step child constantly needing newer fighters and battling their "flying coffins". Even Rang de Basanti, the movie touched on the subject. To be honest, out of the 3 Wings it is probably the Navy which is leagues ahead of the PN. But ok, you proved a point - in fact as soon as India had hit Pak, I had posted here that Pak will retaliate very soon. I am sure the post is here.

The US is currently ruled by a clown who his own administration don't know what he is going to tweet next.

But good talk. I am glad to have a decent conversation.

You ask for sources and then this is your MO -

Source is Hindu.
Or Source is Jewish
Or Source is from Jewish lobby
If the source is Pakistani then that source is an Indian agent.

I would ask you to Google "persecution of minorities in Pakistan" but then again the CEO of Google is of Indian origin.

Last time I gave you a BBC link and you dismissed it as being written by a Jew. Today you are giving me a link from the same BBC. Do you even see the irony?

The biggest irony is from the indian race who have set up a global propaganda machine against an enemy that is more than 7× smaller than it.........:

https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/world-asia-india-50749764

PS The BBC is anti-Pakistani/Muslim and pro-Jewish. The bbc is also pro-hindu/indian.

civil society in india?

You mean where eating beef is a bigger crime than lynching the one eating beef?
Who is standing up for what?

You mean in a society where lies fly as truth even if experts and analysts call them out?
How can anyone stand up for lies?

You mean in a society where women are not safe and some politicians even sell the idea of a fair Kashmiri for votes?
Talk about CIVIL SOCIETY!

Spare me the sermon padre. You stand on a pulpit and preach after living in a society which is at or the near the bottom of every freedom index.

Modi still begging in Hindustan to the masses. LOL looks like no one is buying his BS after losing the elections.

As Protests Flare in India, Modi Plays a New Position: Defense
