Bangalore: The Karnataka unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party passed a resolution on Tuesday to make Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as the party's prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. The move came a day after there were reports that BJP president Rajnath Singh has initiated talks with top party leaders to appoint Modi as the campaign committee chairman of the party for the next general elections.
It seems the BJP has gone into damage control mode after party's veteran leader LK Advani rated Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan higher than Modi in their achievements in their respective states. "Gujarat was a healthy state when Modiji became CM. He improved the state. But here Shivrajji has achieved a complete turnaround, transforming a 'bimaru' state into a healthy state that is counted internationally," Advani had said during a convention of BJP organisers in Gwalior on Saturday.
While the Congress poked fun at the BJP over the issue saying there was a "civil war" in the Opposition party over the issue of its prime ministerial candidate, the BJP president on Monday tried to play down the matter saying Advani's words for Chouhan have been misinterpreted. Rajnath also called Modi as the most popular leader of India.
