My personal opinion is that the LCA is not a completely indigenous product but then again neither is the J 10. Its perfectly exportable unless there is some issue with the foreign suppliers same with the current J 10. However its capabilities in my opinion do not justify its price. 30 plus million can buy Mig 29s, F 16s, along with other choices.

As for the statements they might be negative but they have no real derogatory words. Have you seen some of the threads started by JayAtl to bash China? Its not a singular country phenomenon.

Well, nobody said LCA is full of 'Made in India'. Engine & Radar is from outside off course..

And regarding the price, new F-16 blocks costs more than 50 million with strings attached. I do not think the new Mig-29 will be available only in mere 30 million +. It will be more than that with the more upgraded stuff.

And an LCA for 30 million is because of a reliable engine, a world class radar (IsAF wanted their new F-16s with the same ELTA-2032 but US declined) and with good BVR weapons.

We should also consider selling Arjun and dhruv to our neighboura like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal etc.

Sorry, it's not possible for Bangladesh to buy defence equipment from india (the government might be willing but the defence forces would never accept it).

Even with weapons, lot of activity is going on.

A to A- Astra mk1 and mk2.

A to G- Helina (extended range) and a new Anti radiation weapon.

Precision munition-

Long range-- Nirbhay ALCM.

Short range-- Sudarshan LGB.


Other munitions-

Runway denial bombs.

Dumb Iron bombs.



What India lacks is a home made WVR AAM. Rest have either been successfully tested or are on the way.

We don't have Astra Mk1 ready and IAF and IN now opted for Derby instead onf Astra MK1, which imo is surprising, by the fact that we still should have big numbers of R77 missiles. For IN it makes sense, because they upgraded Sea Harriers and when Gorshkov and IAC 1 arrives, the Sea Harriers won't be needed anymore.

However, it seems that if at all, Astra MK2 will be integrated into LCA, which is a long way ago.

Helina is as the name says it, an helicopter version on NAG ATGM and although I would love to see it been used on LCA, for CAS was well, I didn't found a single hint for that so far. Also Helina is under development only and a version for a fighter needs further time as well.

Nirbhay is a cruise missile with a very long range, I highly doubt that it will be integrated on LCA because of the weight. Not to mention that it's also under development only and will be a long shot as well.

Sudarshan LGB is the first and only indigenous PGM that we have and I read that there are plans for an extended range PGM as well, I guess Sudarshan with retractable wings. So there is a potential for a stand off weapon as well.

If we sum that up we can say, there are several indigenous developments going on, but aimed on the mid, or long periods. I expect only Sudarshan LGB to be integrated on LCA anytime soon and that means LCA for exports will depend on foreign weaponary.

Personally I don't see that as a big problem, Russia and Israel will me more than happy to offer their weapons to possible customers. The biggest issue for exports will still be US and to some extend Europeran parts, that comes with EUM, or other restrictions. The GE 414 engine will be the biggest problem here and it wouldn't be the first time that the US vetos exports, like they did with Brazil. But to be honest, all these talks about LCA MK2 and exports imo is PR, I mean come on, the final design is not even ready, let alone the first one operational. The main production will be for Indian forces anyway, which means the first that could be produced for export customers, could come between 2017 and 2020 maybe. There is still so much to do and so much that can happen in the meantime, no need to bother with it, or the details now.

I respect your personal opinion, Making of Tejas is gradual process, Its evolution.. I agree We are using American Engine (So whats wrong in it?? Even rafael used same engine) and we are sure that the so called foreign components will be reduced as time pass...

As India was not making fighter airccraft due to which our aviation component manufacturing sector was not that improved... I will give you a case study please give me the answer...

You want to make/research a fighter plane, you want air worthy certified Nut and Bolt, what will you do??? will you start new industry for that?? or you will buy it for that time and later you will start manufacturing it???

Hi, sancho! I can assure you about the veracity of my post. The quoted post of mine should be read in the context of the thread. I'm aware of the current progress of all these weapon programes, however, when the discussion is about the export of LCA mk2, we are talking about 2017 minimum. Hence the post.


The choice of Derby is not surprising as it is not selected as a standard BVR weapon for the LCA. Rather it will be used to demonstrate the BVR capacity of the Tejas to gain the FOC. The R series will find it's place on the LCA's wings as one of the major modifications in the 2005 ASR was changing the wing to make it capable of carrying the R 77!

Same is the case with Astra mk1. As of now the captive trials of the missile are complete and it will undergo A to A testing this year. However, the test platform for developing Astra is the mki. So, the mki will be the first craft to get the Astra and LCA will surely follow. It is just like the grippen getting meteor earlier than the Rafale or EF!


Also, the develoment of Astra mk2 is ahead of schedule with successful development of dual pulse motor for the same. So we may see the LCA qualify for the mk2 skipping the mk1!

Helina mk1 is ready for user trials. Mk2 with advanced seeker is in the making. Project has already been initiated to enhance the range upto 17-20 km and give it NLOS like capabilities. Efforts are also on to integrate it with UAVs. All in all, a brimstone like weapon is in the making and will be ready by 2017. Most of this is mentioned in the presentation on helina in the AERO INDIA seminar 2011.

Nirbhay will qualify for the centreline pylon of LCA mk2.
And it is not a distant thing, you will see it complete the development cycle by 2015.

Sudarshan LGB is the forebearer of a huge thrust in PGM and loitering smart munitions of various ranges by DRDO (the chief himself said so). We will see a lot of projects in this area in the near future, however, almost all of them are hush hush so the info will leak out only in 2014 and ahead.

I agree with this whole para. We must focus on getting the mk2 ready and operational in the IAF in full strength. All other things can wait!

India's Department of Defence Production has asked agencies developing the Mk.2 version of the indigenous Tejas light combat aircraft to plan ahead to position the aircraft for export. HAL is understood to have been asked to conduct a study assessing interest in the light fighter. A previous study, conducted by DRDO in 2005, made no specific observations except to say that the aircraft had "elicited international interest and could be positioned as an export item on the lines of the Advanced Light Helicopter".

The export of defence equipment has been a highly sensitive subject in India. The country has never exported lethal defence equipment as part of a commercial contract (it has, as part of operational assistance pacts, for instance, to Sri Lanka) and the idea that India should exploit successful defence programmes in the international market and frequently looked at as unthinkable, in keeping with the country's "peaceful" image. However, the DRDO has frequently held that there is a reasonably high level of interest in many of its weapon products, including guided missiles and ammunition.
