RATKO Mladic in Sarajevo on Feb 15, 1994.—AFP

BELGRADE: Ratko Mladic, who faces judgement on Nov 22 (Wednesday) for alleged genocide, believed himself a crusading defender of the Serbs but was dubbed the “Butcher of Bosnia” for mass slaughter at the hands of his forces.

The ruthless commander of Bosnian Serb troops in the 1990s civil war, Mladic came to symbolise a barbaric plan to rid swathes of Bosnian territory of Croats and Muslims and carve out a Serb-only state.

Captured in 2011 after 16 years on the run, Europe’s most wanted man was by then an ailing shadow of his former stocky self.

But the general’s defiance appeared undimmed during his trial at The Hague, although he was dogged by ill health, and the 74-year-old remains a hero to many Serbs to this day.

To the families of war victims, he will forever be associated with the bloody 44-month siege of Sarajevo and the 1995 massacre of 8,000 Muslims in Srebrenica.

Mladic presented the sacking of the eastern Bosnian enclave as retribution against “the Turks” for a massacre of Serbs under the Ottoman Empire, wrote journalist Julian Borger in his book The Butcher’s Trail, published last year.

“He reassured panicked Muslim women captives that their loved ones would be safe at the same time his soldiers were rounding up and slaughtering eight thousand of their husbands and sons,” Borger wrote.

Mladic is charged with genocide over the killings, considered the worst atrocities on European soil since the end of World War II.

He will learn his fate on Wednesday from the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) on 11 counts arising from the conflict, including war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Mladic denies all the charges, describing them as “obnoxious” at his first court appearance in 2011.

“I defended my country and my people,” he said.

Military path
Born in the village of Bozinovici in eastern Bosnia, Mladic’s life was struck by bloodshed and tragedy as a toddler, when his father was killed in battle by the Ustasha, Croatia’s fascist World War II regime.

Mladic followed his parent’s military path and was a colonel in the Yugoslav army when the federation began to crumble in June 1991.

He was sent to organise the Serb-dominated army in Croatia, and the following May he was made commander of Bosnian Serb forces, tasked with seizing land across Bosnia for Serbs.

Former Yugoslav army spokesman Ljubodrag Stojadinovic once described Mladic as “narcissistic, conceited, vain and arrogant”.

In 1994, at the height of the war, Mladic’s only daughter Ana committed suicide in Belgrade, aged 23, with her father’s favourite pistol.

Those close to the general were reported as saying that he was pushed over the edge by her death, which came a year before the Srebrenica massacre took place. Prosecutors also hold Mladic responsible for the interminable siege of Sarajevo, which claimed an estimated 10,000 lives and deprived the city of food, water and electricity with a barrage of shells and sniper fire.

At the trial’s end, prosecutor Alan Tieger dismissed defence claims that the general’s role in the conflict was limited, maintaining he was the man who “called the shots”.

‘Coward’s war’
Although Mladic was revered by his men, “his war was a coward’s war”, according to veteran Balkans journalist Tim Judah.

“He fought few pitched battles but managed to drive hundreds of thousands of unarmed people out of their homes,” Judah wrote in his book The Serbs.

Mladic was indicted by the ICTY in 1995 and dismissed from his post the following year. But he initially enjoyed a luxurious and protected life as a fugitive, staying in Serbian military resorts with an entourage of staff, according to Borger.

He later went underground in Belgrade after the fall of strongman Slobodan Milosevic — who died while on trial at The Hague in 2006 — and as Serbia came under growing pressure from the West to capture Mladic.

The general was finally arrested in May 2011 at his cousin’s house in bucolic northern Serbia.

His last request before his transfer to the court was to visit his daughter’s grave.

A proud Turcophobe and Islamophobe, may he be in hell soon. These animals like him with a chip on their shoulder always have a perverted and uneducated view of history to justify their barbarism in the present.

It is unbelievable how hard West is trying to pretend that Serbs were the only criminals, and Croats and Muslims were the victims. As far as I know, it was the Serbs who suffered bigger losses and killed less enemies than the other sides of the civil war.

This is factually incorrect and is a false narrative typically spread by the aggressor. According to the ICTY Demographic Unit, an estimated 69.8% or 25,609 of the civilians killed in the war were Bosniak (with 42,501 military deaths), with the Bosnian Serbs suffering 7,480 civilian casualties(15,299 military deaths), the Bosnian Croats suffering 1,675 civilian casualties (7,183 military deaths).

Ratko Mladic employed inhuman tactics against civilians, women, children and the elderly. The hypocrisy is truly sad, but it is okay, Bosnia succeeded and continues its's 1,000 year existence.

As far as I know Saraevo was almost 100% Serbian city before the civil war. And now there are only few Serbs living in city. Kosovan Serbs were expelled from their country and Serbska Kraina lost many territories. So, actually - it were Serbs the victims. Only because Serbs are historically close to Russia they are described as evil side - West do not care about Balcan Muslims, just like they do not care about Afgan Muslims or Iraq Muslims and so on.
Serbs were the victims in reality, not in CNN fake reports.

Lol what has Kosovo got to do with anything? We are talking about Bosnia. Whataboutism is a sign of a flawed and incoorrect position.

Listen man research the facts about the Bosnian war. Bosnian Muslim forces at the beginning only had ONE tank, a few howitzers and a dozen or so mortars. Our enemy at the time was the 4th largest army in Europe. Heck we had to create improvised rifles made from plumbing components in order to survive? So how could we possibly kill any Serbs?

In my hometown of Tuzla controlled by Bosnian government forces throughout the war the Orthodox church was and still is in perfect condition. On the otherhand nearly every mosque in Serb occupied territory was destroyed, burnt, demolished etc..

The Serbian forces at the time were no different from Isis. In fact you could say they were a christian version of Isis

Also majority of Serb civilians killed during the war were victoms of either Croat forces or Serbs themselves. As there were Serb civilians in places like Sarajevo who lost their lives through serbian shelling.

Nice lie and spin, Bosniak.

It was Bosnia, Bosnia was supported by Al Qaida, even that scum Bin Laden spent some time in Bosnia.

Who brought El Mujahedeen? Who beheaded more then 100 Serbs and Croats?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bosnian_mujahideen

Who contributed to ISIS the most at Balkans along Albanians?

Even BBC called you "Craddle of modern Jihad".

Oh god not another display of whatabout-ism

Firstly Bin Laden did not spend time in Bosnia that is just a hilariously stupid lie

Secondly the so-called "Bosnian mujaheddin" where a non state actor and there numbers were so small that by the end of the war the Bosnian government turned against them and basically told them to GTFO

Thirdly; I thought BBC was a propaganda network according to you Serb nationalists? So when they speak out against Serbs they are propaganda but when they speak out against other ethnicities they are not?

Like it or not nearly every major Serb political and military leader during the Bosnian war have been convicted by the Hague tribunal for crimes that include Genocide, Ethnic cleansing, torture, crimes against humanity and commandeering the mass rape of women.

The leader of the Bosnian-Serbs Radovan Karadzic was convicted of Genocide in Srebrenica with a lengthy sentence and justice will be served when Mr Mladic is expected to be convicted for Genocide tomorrow as well

I truly do not know where you're getting your facts, perhaps you are simply trolling and supporting a false narrative. The city of Sarajevo was founded in 1461 as part of the Ottoman empire, it has always been a majority Bosniak city, and in 1992 Bosniaks constituted 60% of the population with Serbs, Croats, Yugoslavs, Gypsies making up the rest. Today, Serbs live in the eastern outskirts of the city not due to ethnic clansing but becuase they refuse to live with Bosniaks. The Serbs made up 33% of the Bosnian population in 1992, they refused to live in a multi-ethnic democratic state and instead pursued a "para-country" called repulika srpska, something that never existed in the history of the region. The serbs don't have the right to create their own state on Bosnian territory, especially given the areas that make up this entity were ethnically mixed, and in almost all of easten Bosnia it was majoity Bosniak. The methods used are inhumane..

Similar to Croatia, serbs made up 10% of the population but refused to live in Croatia, which btw is 500 years older than Russia. Instead this 10% population proceeded to create a para-country in Croatia too, but the Croats with the support of Europe kicked their butts. Their methods was stupid and uncalled for, the Serbs as a minority had all the rights in both Croatia and Bosnia but they still refused to accept the demise of Yugoslavia ( a pro serb state even though serbs made up 30% of oveall yugosalv population)

Nice lie and spin, Bosniak.

Both are good at fighting women and children, but get their butts handed to them when they face real soldiers ;)

Wow Roki Vulovic song for mladic was one of the best song from the Yugoslav war.. Never thought about this side of mladic

Serbs were cleansed in Croatia yes. This does not get reported often as far as I can see. What happened in Bosnia is however clear cut. Bosniaks were by far the biggest victims, and the Serbs probably infuriated by their cleansing in Croatia unleashed their full wrath on the Bosniaks (who unlike the Croats and Serbs had no outside state giving them full support explaining why their civilian casualties far outweigh their military casualties).

No. Serbs got "cleansed" from Croatia at the end of the war in 1995. AFTER srebrenica.

Serbian genocide and ethnic cleansing in bosnia started in 1992.

Also Serbs werent actually cleansed. The Croatians took their legitimate territory in their OWN country back from armed terror groups.

There were a few individual war crimes but the Serb population could have stayed but decided to flee on orders of their own high command.

Anyway Mladic got sentenced for Genocide today and received life imprisonment. I hope he rots in jail and dies in upmost pain and suffering.

At least some justice for the victims of the Bosnian genocide and victims of Mladic in Croatia too

Serbs did dot have full supprot. In that days Russia was desintegrating itself and could not fight with its own separatists. So, Serbs were alone agains West, who supported Croats (as far as I know every Croatian war criminals were justified in Hague) and Islamic terrorists groups.
