Russia's contract to buy Mistral class helicopter carriers from France should be signed in Paris at the Euronaval 2010 defense show in October or Russia may lag behind in the ship building industry, Russian Navy commander Admiral Vladimir Vysotsky said.Originally Russia was negotiating the purchase of one French-built Mistral class amphibious assault ship and planned to build three more vessels of the same class in partnership with the French naval shipbuilder DCNS. But earlier this year, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said talks were underway on the 2+2 scheme, under which Russia will buy two ships from France, and build a further two under license

well russia has its on biggest naval shipyard which have produced world biigest submarines too world biggest aircraft carriers and heavy ships why they have to go for france to buy helicopter Carrier isnt their industry not that capable of making such thing or they lack the technology i doubt seems like russia want france on its side more than france to american side

The Mistral and Tonnerre BPC (bâtiment de projection et de commandement) ships, are the French Navy's new 21,300t amphibious assault, command and power projection ships. The ships have been built by DCN in partnership with Thales and Chantiers de l'Atlantique. Each ship has the payload capacity and versatility to carry up to 16 heavy helicopters and one-third of a mechanised regiment, plus two LCAC hovercraft or up to four landing craft.

In April 2007, DCN became DCNS. This followed an agreement in which Thales became a 25% shareholder in the new company and DCN acquired the naval business of Thales France (excluding naval equipment).

The Mistral Class is fitted with a high-performance communications suite which makes the ship suitable for deployment as a command vessel. The ships also have the capacity to accommodate a combined (multi-national) joint (i.e. multi-service) task force (CJTF).

"Mistral was delivered to the French Navy in February 2006."The contract for the two vessels was placed in January 2001. Keel for the FS Mistral (L9013) was laid in July 2003 and it was launched from the Brest dockyard in October 2004. Mistral was commissioned into the French Navy in February 2006. Tonnerre (L 9014) was laid down in August 2003 and launched in July 2005. It was commissioned in February 2007.

The French Navy placed the order for the third vessel, Dixmude, in April 2009. Keel for the ship has been laid in January 2010. It is scheduled to be launched in late 2010 and commissioned in 2012.

In July 2006, Mistral was deployed of the coast of Lebanon in support of the French Navy Operation Baliste, evacuating French nationals during the conflict involving Israel and the Lebanon.

The Mistral and Tonnerre replace the L9021 Ouragan and L9022 Orage which were built at Brest Naval Dockyard and entered service in 1965 and 1968.

Construction
The hulls were built in three main sections. DCN constructed the hull centre and aft sections at St Nazaire, Brest. Alstom Marine-Chantiers de l'Atlantique in Saint Nazaire constructed the forward section of the hull which was transferred to the DCN shipyard at Brest for assembly. DCN subcontracted Stocznia Remontowa in Gdansk to carry out construction and fitting for the centre and aft sections.

Command and control
The Mistral Class is fitted with the DCN Senit 8 derivative combat data system and will be fitted with the French Navy's SIC 21 command system for joint operations, which is being developed by Thales.

A high-performance communications suite includes the Thales Syracuse III satellite communications system.

Aircraft
The ship has the capacity to carry up to 16 medium or heavy helicopters below deck, for example the NH90, SA 330 Puma, AS 532 U2 Cougar or AS 665 Tigre helicopters. The flight deck has six landing spots and a 1,800m² hangar. The 5,000m² flight deck can accommodate up to six helicopter movements simultaneously.

Amphibious assault capability
The Mistral will carry either four CTM, landing craft utility (LCU) or two air-cushion landing craft (LCACs).

"The Mistral and Tonnerre are to replace the L 9021 Ouragan and L 9022 Orage."The French Navy has plans to purchase new high-speed landing craft, engins de débarquement amphibie (EDA) which could be carried on the Mistral.

The ship has a crew of 160 with 20 officers. A mission voyage involving the transport of troops and equipment would typically take two to three weeks. Mistral and Tonnerre carry sufficient stores for the crew and 450 troops for 45 days between replenishments. The maximum speed is 19kt and the range at 14kt is 11,000nm.

The 69-bed, 750m² hospital is equipped with two operating theatres. If additional hospital or medevac space is required, the hangar can also be converted into a modular field hospital.

Weapons
The Mistral is armed with two MBDA France Simbad launchers for the Mistral air defence missile. Mistral has infrared guidance and a range up to 6km.

The ship also has two Breda Mauser 30mm naval guns and four 12.7mm machine guns.

Countermeasures
The ship's electronic support measures include the Thales ARBR 21 radar warning receiver.

Sensors
The vessel's surveillance radar is the MMR-3D NG G-band multi-role radar from Thales Naval France. The MRR-3D has a lightweight phased array antenna and operates as both a surveillance radar and a self-defence system sensor, with automatic mode switching.

"The Mistral is the French Navy's first all-electric warship."In surface surveillance mode, the MRR-3D NG can detect low and medium-level targets at ranges of up to 140km and in long-range 3D air surveillance mode targets up to 180km; in the self-defence mode, it can detect and track any threat within a radius of 60km.

Navigation radar is the Sperry Marine Bridgemaster, operating at I-band.

Propulsion
The Mistral is the French Navy's first all-electric warship and is fitted with two Alstom 7MW electric azimuth pods. The power-generation system consists of three 16V32 and one 18V200 Wartsila diesel generators providing 20.8MW power.



Russia have lost billions after not selling to iran how they generate the money to buy weapons still their economy is not that good 70 percent of their economy rotates on Military Equipment sale so how they manage to buy this heavy ship

The soviets as history shows were never ahead in tech or weapons. They built their arms industry on reverse engineering American weapons supplied during WW2. When the platforms reached their max technological elasticity, the Russian arms industry simply took a reverse gear. That explains why once again they are in the west for shopping.

actually soviets were very good in tech though they weren't ahead of US, BUT they sure knew how to make US crap their pants.

After the Georgian conflict Russia seen an immidiate need for a Mistral class ship, the problem with Russia building something like the Mistral is time. Russia would need to build or modify a shipyard to accomidate something the size of the Mistral, than they would need to design the ship, once they design the ship they need to get all the legistics and manpower setup so they can actually start construction, once construction is complet they would have put the ship through sea trials and only after that they would be able to comission the ship. Another reason they wanted the Mistral is the technology transfer.

Typical baseless comment, the Soviets were ahead of the so called "west" in some areas and behind in others, and what the heck is the west anyways? If Sweden develops something are they automatically ahead of the Russians because they are the "west"?

Lets discuss some Soviet technology, the Soviets fielded the first airborn PESA radar, the Mig-31 also had one of the most advanced data links when in first entered service, the data link allowed the Mig-31 to identify and simultaneously engage numerous targets, it also automatically linked other Mig-31's, as this happened each Mig was assigned to the most dangerous target, the data-link was also programed to anticipate 'deceptive' maneuvers. Ironically typical internet rumors state that the Soviets had little experience with data-link and that they were behind :lol:

What about the VA-111 supercavitating torpedo?

Or what about the RD-180 rocket engines that are conveniently used to power America's Atlas rockets?

What did they reverse engineering those items from? Better yet how did they reverse engineer something that was uniqe to the Soviet Union? Perhaps it's time to give credit where credit is due and not take away or deny accomplishmeants from others.

Buddy few guys simply post their comment without any source or knowledge. They simply compare USSR or Russia with their own , thats not true. USSR was quiet good in technology if not ahead of US. You take any area of defence, Sukhoi series, Akula, BVR missiles or ABM S-300 or any series of it and the list goes on. After Russia came in existence ,economy was not in good shape but its recovering after Putin lead the country.

Russia still hold that knock out punch now...

This is bad news for countries in Baltic and Black Sea areas that feel threatened by Russia. Poland and Estonia in Baltic Sea while Georgia in Black Sea faces Russian threats and possible aggression. France should have listened to reservations by these European and NATO countries. It reinforces France reputation of selling arms to anybody that has money.

^ But the French don't care if the world perceives them like that. Also it will do no good to argue against this French sale when others are also selling to anyone and everyone with cash. The timing and nature of this deal solely reflects a merger of interests and nothing more, I don't think there is any geo-strategic between the lines reading. Sure it puts traditional Russian rivals in great risk but this Mistral deal will also get them more attention from NATO, their countermeasures will be in place by the time the carrier is operational.

Ahh.. from France with Love :lol:. Smart move. But Russia already has a huge coastline. Is there any plans for making a dockyard that can manufacture such ships?

I don't think a couple of Mistral class warships would suffice if you're expanding to your former Soviet size.

A bit off topic Benny bud, but I think we should take a leaf outta Russian Navy's book and take a look at this babe. It seems bloody advantagous especially in Gulf of Aden region where most of our ships are under piracy threat and need rapid MARCOs deployment.
