Mission to rescue boys trapped in Thai cave begins

The mission to rescue the 12 trapped boys and their football coach in Tham Luang cave in northern Thailand began on Sunday morning, Reuters reported citing Narongsak Osottanakorn, the head of the rescue mission.

"Today we're at peak readiness," he said.

A total of 13 foreign divers, five Thai divers and five Navy SEALs will be sent in to extract the trapped group. They're the best people to work with the team.

Each child will be escorted by two divers. The fastest group can be expected to be brought out at 9pm (0200GMT). After that, they'll be retrieved out one by one.

The whole rescue operation will take three to four days, said the head of the rescue mission.

Three solutions

Now even as the mission of a diving rescue is underway, there are pros and cons for this solution. Drilling and waiting for the flood to recede were the two other options authorities had in mind to get the trapped youth football team out.

- Diving

Diving is currently the quickest yet most dangerous option. The trapped boys and the coach need to swim underwater for hours and trek more than three kilometers under the guidance of professionals. The muddy water and darkness make things more complicated.

- Drilling

Rescuers would drill holes to drain water or drill a shaft through hard rocks from above the cave to lead them out. But first they need to build a new road to transport heavy drilling equipment to the cave. Heavy rain could also cause a landslide or cave-in.

- Waiting

Waiting for the flood to recede is the third option. Rescuers are working around the clock to pump out the water, while sending in food and medicine. This process may take as long as four months as the monsoon season in Thailand runs until October.

The boys, aged 11 to 16, and their 25-year-old coach were exploring inside the cave on June 23 when rain flooded the complex and rising waters blocked their exit. They have since been trapped inside the cave.

Wish a speedy rescue and good luck for the trapped boys and teacher.

Well, we sure don't need Elon Musk's midget submarine to do the rescue.

That's a poor publicity attempt on the plight of a number of innocent kids. Only 82 people would be impressed with such a low publicity stunt.

US regime is becoming funny and getting desperate.

On the ground, rescue mission is under way by the Thai Navy Seals.
