Carriers are incredible hard to sink. The Americans actually performed demolition test on one its retired aircraft carriers a few years back to see how much damage it can absorb before going under. Needless to say it took a while, as in several weeks. I think in actual combat, they should focus on disabling the carrier's ability to operate its air groups instead of sinking it. Operationally the carrier as good as a sunk ship in combat without its ability to launch and service planes.
