Ministry Keen to Purchase 500 More Howitzer Guns from BAE Systems

. .
What about Dhunush & DRDO155 mm which they developed locally, even TATA and few other companies already developed Howitzers.

Dhanush in production. It will replace Bofors guns.
TATA and other companies are participating in a mounted gun system, not a part of ultra light howitzer procurments.

@Abingdonboy Page 1 First post - 145 already to be signed.. 500 more planned.. = 645
I can say with honesty, you will be dancing hearing this news... This government will change the shape of Indian Defence if they walk the talk and deliver the things from paper to reality.
I just hope BAE system comes out with a proper plan soon with so much from india. A proper time bound shifting of line in India will be most welcome.

30% tot/offset wont help us these companies:(
Any such big deal should involve 50-60% tot or offset

At the beginning there was no facility at all to assemble and test these in India, now India gets a good system and a private firm, outside Bharat Forge possibly, that can assemble and test artillery systems - a facility produced under the wing of BAE. I think there is something attractive about that, outside the already good product.

your ok unless it goes under your ......err lungi.

Do we have money for all this? whats the idea, to bankrupt pakistanis or bankrupt ourselves? No doubt we should spend for defence but putting the entire money in the pot on it is too much.

At 5 Mil a gun its expensive
645 will cost 3.2 Billion USD or around Rs 20000 crores
It's expensive but manageable since it will be spread over 4-5 years

Also US Army barely operates 950 of these Guns
645 Guns will make India the second biggest operator of this Gun.
Since most of our future conflicts will be fought in the Himalayas, these Guns will provide us the edge and versatility which our friends in Beijing and Pindi won't be able to match

Also I expect an order for at least 20 more chinooks directly for the army to support deployment of these Guns and operationalization of the Mountain Strike corps

Dhanush in production. It will replace Bofors guns.

Bofors are not going anywhere, and neither is M46
Dhanush as things stand will replace 105mm Field Guns which barely have 15 km range

Currently Bofors are deployed in J&K while M46 in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim
Once we get M777
Bofors will be moved to Punjab and M46 to Meghalaya, Assam and West Bengal

The M777 is part of the ultra light category. The ones you are mentioning are part of another requirement.

What is interesting is that the additional numbers mentioned earlier was 290. But now, they are talking of 500. Which means the mountain corps is on.

They are actually. Bae is currently selecting an Indian partner from the private companies :) Pretty sure, this 500 news must have been already known to them. Hence the agreement to produce here.

As for the Indian design, there is one by Bharat Forge. This gun currently has a smaller calibre. They are working on increasing this and range. This is as per the Chairman and owner of Bharat Forge :)
