Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Energy Khurram Dastgir on Sunday arrived in Tehran to seek increased “cooperation in the field of energy,” Pakistan’s Embassy announced.

The visit comes amid a worsening energy crisis in Pakistan where power shortfall has ballooned to above 6 gigawatts and oil imports have pushed up the trade deficit.

Pakistan Embassy Sunday announced via its verified Twitter handle that Federal Minister for Energy(Power Division) Khurram Dastagir Khan had arrived in Tehran earlier in the day.

He was received by Mohammad Ali Farahnakian, Deputy Minister of Energy for International Affairs at the airport.

“During the visit, [the] Honourable Minister will discuss the ways to increase cooperation between the two countries in the field of energy,” the embassy said.

The prospects of energy cooperation between Pakistan and Iran have been explored for several decades.

In 1995, the two countries signed an agreement for the construction of over 2700 kilometers long Iran-Pakistan Gas Pipeline.

Iran completed its section of the pipeline in 2011, and reportedly offered Pakistan $500 million (€448 million) to help with construction.

However, international sanctions against Tehran and Washington’s opposition to the pipeline have stalled the project for years.

The possibility of completing the project almost died when the United States under then-President Trump withdrew from a multilateral deal on Iran’s nuclear program.

The situation has changed now as, on the one hand, the war in Ukraine has pushed energy prices higher and, on the other, Russia has increased its supply of oil to India and China, two major buyers of energy from Iran, at discounted rates.

Iran is seeking venues for energy exports while the European buyers are looking for energy deals in the middle east to make up for the supplies they lost after imposing sanctions against Moscow.

How will the Americans react? The Americans are always opposed to IP gas pipeline. If PDM goes ahead they will earn brownie points.

Holy smokes. This is going to piss off the Americans.

Didn't Bajwa remove IK for visiting Russia? PDM is making visits to Iran which is a good thing obviously.

So you are worried about PDM getting brownie points than being happy that we would be getting the gas?

Yes. I am happy in a way. I always encourage cooperation with Iran. Nevertheless, let's see if an energy deal can be materialized. Uncle Sam won't like this and I am surprised how US stooges PDM dared this move.

Looks like Uncle Sam has given the go ahead to engage with Iran instead of Russia.

Iran back in the US good books since MBS is not playing ball and Iran is looking to go back to JCPOA agreement as a quid pro quo.

It would have only happened with Daddy US' nod of approval. US is propping up Iran now since Arabs are pissed at Biden admin.

Earlier FM BBZ made a visit to Iran to enhance energy cooperation.

might be US govt using Pakistan as a convenient "conduit" for receiving Iranian energy. US VERY LIKELY, IMO, seeking different guises and methods atm to access Iranian energy, especially in-lieu of the Ukrainian war situation - sanctioning Russian oil and energy basically made every other large oil exporter richer.

Irani company to construct transmission line from Polan to Gwadar

An Irani company named as Sunir will construct an electricity transmission line for supply of power from Iran to Pakistan’s port city of Gwadar and an agreement has been signed in this regard.
According to Pakistan’s Ministry of Energy (Power Division), the agreement was signed on Wednesday under which an Irani company Sunir will construct an electricity transmission line for supply of power from Polan to Gwadar (Balochistan).
However, Pakistan’s Power division has so far not shared more details particularly the total cost of the construction of the transmission line and the duration for completion of this electricity transmission line project.
On Tuesday, Pakistan and Iran signed an agreement for supply of additional 100 megawatt of electricity to fulfil the daily power needs of the port city of Gwadar. The agreement for the supply of additional 100MW of electricity to Gwadar was signed by Pakistan’s National Transmission and Despatch Company and Iran’s power generation and distribution company known as TAVANIR on Tuesday.
Federal Minister for Power Khurram Dastgir Khan had reached Tehran on June 19, 2022 on a four day visit to ensure enhancement in the energy cooperation between the two neighbouring countries. Khurram Dastgir, in a statement, said that this project will be completed within a shortest possible time to provide relief to the people of Balochistan.
It is relevant to note that Iran has been supplying electricity to Gwadar, Kech and Panjgur districts in southwestern Balochistan since 1999. It supplied 35MW daily until 2013, after which the quota was increased to 100MW due to the growing needs of Gwadar. Iran, during the month of May 2022, had supplied 54.52 Gigawatt hour (GWh) which was 0.37 percent of the total power generated from different sources and the cost of one unit of Iranian electricity is Rs18.9673 per kilowatt hour (kWh).
On 20th June, Federal minister for power Khurram Dastgir Khan held a one on one meeting with Iran’s Minister for Energy Ali Akbari Mehrabian in Tehran. The meeting aimed at increasing avenues of cooperation in the energy field between both neighbours.
Both sides discussed various aspects of electricity supply from Polan to Gawadar. Federal minister for power lauded the energy cooperation between Pakistan and Iran and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to strengthen the relations. He stressed on the need to expedite the electricity import project. Both long term and short-term energy plans were discussed.
It is pertinent to mention that Gwadar is not connected to the national grid and relies on power from neighbouring Iran while the port city of Gwadar is the centre of the $65 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
