Hi Everyone!
Alright, I am a mexican student writing my thesis about military's role in the identity of Pakistan
there's a chapter where i am to describe each of the provinces and how they work and type of divisions..etc

So, to begin with...Punjab

I had suggested to include talking about landlords (Chaudhury¿?) and I was suggested to write about Punjabization

Just now I am learning how Punjab itself is so diverse .... I used to think that being a Punjabi was one and only identity...

how would you suggest to explain Punjab?
  • starting by the regions.... ¿? as I was told by @Armstrong:
"Punjab is divided into the heavily populated, relatively prosperous and industrialized Central Punjab and the peripheries of Southern, South-Western, Northern and North-Western parts of Punjab which are less developed, less populated and less prosperous"

  • ethnic and linguistic differences
  • Punjab and its place in Assembly (seats given by population, which would explain the importance of Punjab in the government)
  • Punjabization ..... or de-punjabization as I was told by @Pak-one
  • internal issues (would this include landlords and kinship in politics ¿?)
What else would be worth mentioning? what am i missing? or what other focus can i give?

Muchas gracias in advance!

@INDIC
Punjab was the one of the dominant provinces of British India, the canal colonies boom brought agricultural boom in semi-arid Punjab and while most of the soldiers in British Indian army were from Punjab which was inherited by Pakistan. So after partition they were already in the dominance to large extent and military dictatorship gave them overall dominance unlike the Bengalis of East Pakistan who were impoverished.

So I should include that Punjab had or still has dominance in agriculture and army over the rest of the provinces?

Arguculture, Yes because the once the main source of livelihood has always been agriculture. But now the paterns are changing. Leaning more towards agro-based industry rather than hardcore agriculture.
Army, Yes a majority but not domination. It is because 1-Physique of People in Punjab. 2-History of military service. People still consider public and military service as a matter of family pride.

Yes, the region still dominates in agriculture and there is also water dispute between provinces like the Kalabagh dam which people think will benefits Punjab most while not good of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh. Later on(don't know the time pre or post independence), the irrigation facilities were expanding into Northern Sindh inviting farmers from Punjab to tilt those newly watered land led to unease among Sindhi nationalists.

thanks!
so
Means military majority of the punjabi is only natural because its share is similar to its population share ...
and Agricultural? also natural because of the rivers?
but now industry has started to rise...I have read about Faisalabad ...is it the only city who is growing in its industry?

Ok ok thanks!
so it's really important to mention water disputes which is directly related to agricultural punjabi dominance... (correct?)

Its not about Physique, most of the soldiers in British Indian army were from Punjab (North-West) because after the 1857 Rebellion, British downsized or stopped recruiting people from Northern and Eastern India because of their deep involvement in 1857 soldier revolts which destroyed the East India Company. But he is right that soldier customs got deeply associated in Punjabi culture of Pakistan and even give them sense of pride against a bigger and stronger nation like India.

There are people in Pakistan who still believe in it , even Ayub Khan had strong belief in martial race theory during 1965 India-Pakistan war.

You do realize that you're having a conversation about the internal dynamics of Punjab with someone who cannot string together two sentences in Punjabi let alone having set foot on Pakistani Punjab soil ?

Not to mention who's posts are characterized by jingoism infused with dishing dirt at Pakistan whilst romanticizing a notion of India that never was ! :undecided:

This sense of pride to Pakistanis comes in two sense, first that they belong to Martial race and other being Muslims who ruled over 'weak' Hindus for 1000 years. ;)

Not all Opinions are equal especially if the person giving it doesn't know the first thing about what he/she is talking about !

You should try @LoveIcon @Chak Bamu @Secur @Oscar @EyanKhan - For starters they live in Pakistan and for another they're fairly fair in their assessments !

Well as far as industry is concerned, different types of industries have clustered in different cities. Like textiles in Faisalabad. Electric appliances in Gujranwala, Sports industry in Sialkot. Services in Lahore and Agro industry in regions of Multan.
