President inaugurates military station in Bengal (Lead)
Baharampur (West Bengal) | Saturday, 2016 11:45:04 PM IST
President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday inaugurated a new military station in Murshidabad district in West Bengal.

Mukherjee, who had also laid the foundation stone of the Berhampore Military Station in 2014, said that the station has great importance because it is the only such station between Siliguri (in north Bengal) and Kolkata which is very near to Bangladesh border.

In his address, he also appreciated the sacrifices of Indian soldiers and said that they have shown exemplary courage in every battlefield. He saluted the brave hearts whose sacrifices are unparalleled.

Mukherjee, who is on a five-day visit to West Bengal, also inaugurated the Kamoda Kinkar Mukhopadhyay Sarani, a street named after his freedom fighter father, at Suri in neighbouring Birbhum district. He also launched the silver jubilee celebrations of Dishari Club.

He said Mukhopadhyay was among the freedom fighters who fought relentlessly to free the country from British despotism.

He said that during the freedom struggle, several renowned patriots followed Mahatma Gandhiji's principle of non-violence and there were many others who followed the stream of revolution and there was another stream too which posed organised threat to British imperialism and they were the tribals. Birbhum is one of the districts from where the Santhals rose up to fight the British hegemony.

The president lauded the 'Clean India' initiative of the Narendra Modi government and said that the entire country and all its villages and cities should be kept clean and pollution-free.

He said everybody should come forward and work unitedly under this initiative.

No need for Bangladeshis to be concerned.
This military station will be the main training base of the new XVII Mountain Strike Corps aimed at China which is currently under the process of raising.
The corps will have 3 Mountain divisions, 3 independent infantry brigades, 3 artillery brigades, 3 armoured regiments, 2 mechanized infantry regiments, 1 aviation regiment and 1 engineering brigade and a air defence brigade along with two special forces battalions.

The sanctioned personnel strength of the corps is 90,274.

But if it's aimed at China then it would be more logical to have it in Assam or Arunachal Pradesh, why in West Bengal which is far down south?

:sniper:Ever heard about the CHICKENS NECK? Indians wants to be able to defend the 14 km distance between BANGLADESH AND CHINA..IF LOST, will cut off mainland INDIA from the entire N.E of india including the EASTERN PARTS.TILL TRIPURA.:guns::guns::flame:

Shit scared about BANGLADESH.

A simultaneously push from China AND Bangladesh jointly , will still be able to crush your defences within a very short time.

Pretty much self explanatory. A good offense is the best defense. China wants to grab something, India will try to grab something. Completely understandable.

But it's not the formation itself that makes me to think. In case of a war with China, India will at any cost would want to defend the vital Shiliguri corridor. Suppose in a very hypothetical war scenario, if "IF" China still manages to air drop and strangle the Chickens Neck, what will be the Indian response?

Will they pressure BD for corridor to bypas the occupying forces? If denied, Would they try to attack BD to outflank the Chinese?

That's the sole reason I support the strengthening of our Northern formations. Strength of Bangladesh Army Nator, Nilfamari,Rangpur, Bogra and Rajshahi should be increased. All border defence Units should be revamped. BAF base Rajshahi, Bogra, Sayedpur, Shamshernagar should get a full squadron each , air defence should be deployed and battle ready all the moment.

And last of all we should also raise mountain warfare elements. Without proper formations and training in mountain warfare, the defense of our North -Eastern sector will be at stake.

Better be prepared than sorry.

This corps is not a defensive corps which in Indian Army is called pivot corps or holding corps.

This Mountain corps is a Strike corps. It is not meant for defending. Its an offensive corps. The objective for MSC is to take Tibet in case of a war with China.
