KHAR, Pakistan – A government official in Pakistan says militants have killed an army captain and two soldiers in an attack in a tribal region near its border with Afghanistan.

Shah Nasim Khan says a group of some 60 militants attacked the army post in the Ghakhi area of the Bajur tribal region early Saturday. He says they later escaped to Afghanistan's Kunar province. He says another soldier and a civilian cook were injured.

Khan says a retaliatory attack injured some escaping militants.

Pakistan's army largely has cleared the Bajur tribal region of militants but its posts often come under cross-border attacks. In June, militants killed 20 soldiers in three attacks. Pakistani troops killed some 50 attackers in retaliatory attacks.

This is the reason why PA needs armed drones, to watch the border & kill the escaping & entering rented terrorists.

Also PA needs to dissolve chain of command, this move will enable ground troops to call in air strikes whenever they want.

@tarrar thats true, but chain of command or changing their is not suitable at that moment i think so, and also in drone technology, we don't have to ask or beg it from USA, we also have more than 36 patented design for it in public and more in private sectors...
but for these kinda incursions and trans passing borders we shall require AI Based Mechanized Armory.. or drones that can cover the border surveillance through out the day...so this kind of porous or under ground route ways will not been accessible for these takhfiris...

Pre-dawn raid, mountainous terrain, relatively small outpost ... the outpost WAS the 'border guard'.

Additional force protection measures to really minimize these kinds of casualties would probably require improved/reinforced border outposts, additional night vision equipment along with more consistent aerial reconnaissance, especially at night. @Oscar suggestion of the "hub and spoke" model of force projection would be a good one to adapt to the border. Relatively larger border outposts acting as a node for smaller (reinforced) outposts and be able to provide quick and effective support to the smaller posts when needed.

Equipping the newer Pakistani drones (unarmed) with effective night/low light reconnaissance equipment and deploying them along known border hot-spots should become a priority, but as with everything nowadays, the issue is money.

the Afghan security chief will mourn the loss of his guests but then again the Afghan regime is getting used to be exposed even by their own American allies when they snatched Latif Mehsood from them.

Not risky at all. If they can't stop these militants from infiltrating, we will. Army should establish a permanent base in FATA now, and increase border posts on the border. Create a quick reaction force, we already have the drones and we already have the gunships. Just make the coordination easier to call in the air support and chase these filthy animals wherever they are.

really? you got no clue what you are talking about.
your model of decentralized command is possible if every post is manned by an independent force like an infantry or armor brigade with entire element of fighting and support elements... that my dear is not possible and feasible.



IT IS the chain of command that helps coordinate and call in reinforcements and strikes.
it not Raiwand or Bilawal house where the leader barks and the others bow their head down.

in army the command and authority is delegated according to role and responsibility. here a commander whether commissioned or otherwise can call in artillery or air strike .. snipers, forward observers and artillery observation posts are not situated in Rawalpindi.. they have the firepower of entire artillery battery of say 130 mm guns or cobra gunships behind them. their experience and situational awareness enables them to make the call. no one waits for Gen Rahil Sharif to come back from Nawaz Sherif and approve the file for strike or support.

Barring an all out assault ala Swat, cross-border raids will not completely eliminate the cross-border threat, and sporadic attacks against Pakistani positions are likely to continue. Reinforcing and expanding border posts and enhancing aerial surveillance capabilities will provide Pakistani forces the ability to react a lot quicker to impending cross-border assaults and continue to inflict damage upon the TTP.

A combination of offensive (limited cross-border assaults on confirmed imminent threats, thereby meeting the UN's definition of a State's right to act in self-defence) and defensive actions to significantly increase the cost of taking on the Pakistani State could be quite effective. And keep in mind the historical problems along the Afghan-Pakistan border, of non-terrorist criminal activity like gun, drug and goods smuggling - enhanced surveillance and border posts will continue to play a huge part in protecting the Pakistani State even after the TTP threat is minimized.

We have limited gunships racking a lot of hours in combat operations (divided between Balochistan and FATA) and I am not aware of the status of producing and deploying drones equipped with effective all weather surveillance capabilities at forward operating posts (or border posts). With current capabilities it just is not possible to provide 'around the clock Close Air Support' - new gunships are going to take time and money - I would argue that fortifying border posts and increasing unmanned and ground based surveillance capabilities would be cheaper, quicker and in some ways more effective.
