Jammu and Kashmir: An Indian Air Force MIG 21 on a routine sortie crashed near Bijbehara in south Kashmir on Tuesday morning killing the pilot. The combat aircraft crashed into an open field in Bijbehara, located in Anantnag district, about an hour from Srinagar. According to a CNN-IBN news report, while the pilot was declared dead, the co-pilot sustained injuries. There are no reports yet on whether any civilians were injured when the fighter jet crashed. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah issued a message offering his condolences stating that he hopes the people on ground are safe.

Some reports say it was a MiG-21 while others report it as a MiG-29, in either case it was a twin seat trainer.

Man I really hope that Modi sarkar stuffs the Tejas down IAF's throat after MOD comes under him next week. Whatever it may be, but a brand new Tejas is anyday better than a 30 years old fatigued old jet. It has not crashed even once, it has modern systems and has cleared all tests.

WTF is taking so long then? Shows there was corruption.

Time to kick out the Bisons as well and order 200+ Tejas while being upgraded from time to time. But first get them in.

India should not to fly MIG 21, when parts sold to the third world countries, but also to recover some of the cost.

Look at the bloody avionics and flight performance on the Tejas. It is arguably the best 4+ Gen aircraft present in the world (Gripen C/D,F 16 A/B,early C block,JF 17 included). IAF is either stupid or deliberately holding out.

I mean some of the systems on the plane like ELTA 2032 HYBRID MMR RADAR (150 KM RANGE), HMDS, FLIR, RWR, MAWS, HIGH TWR, LOW WING LOADING, ALL AXIS DIGITAL FCS, STEALTH COMPOSITES, LOW RCS (0.3 MS^2), LOW COST, ETC.

India should not to fly MIG 21, when parts sold to the third world countries, but also to recover some of the cost.

I like the Bison as a legacy plane but it is obsolete. I mean just compare to Tejas statistics I have given. Murderous negligence.

And true story is

All those with the misconception that the MiG-21 has been retired, wrong. IAF continues to operate >200 of them. (And it has no choice.) :Shiv Aroor

I solely blame MOD and DRDO/HAL for this tragic loss of life.
