What's new

Middle East in the Olympics

Yeah, but it's too much expectation from these guys, specially considering the really difficult schedule of games for Sourian and Abdwali tomorrow who definitely have the chance to get two gold medals. Ehsan Haddadi screwed up other wise we could have 3 gold medals by now. BTW, have you heard that an Iranian runner has reached to the semi-finals of 100m runnig games?!!! His name is Taftian. Only one other Caucasian(white) guy from France had a better time than Taftian.

Yes I know, he reached semi-finals. But his chances are narrow, because Bolt and some other similar to him are very hard to beat. But he might get a medal against all odds if he tries his best. The difference is just a very small fraction of a second to get a gold.

Competing with African race in running(especially short distances) is almost impossible!

Only 1, we aren't that good then.
Olympics is really difficult. It's not comparable to any other games. Have patience bro and wait for wrestling ;)

We should have same amount of medals as Germany if you look at the population.

How is Turkey doing any good medals?

I'm not into sports so not sure where you see this information.

We have got only a silver medal in weightlifting so far. We were about to get a bronze medal yesterday in the female judo but our girl lost in a close fight in the bronze medal game. There were also a bunch of another respectable results but with no medals in other sports. Female basketball team is doing good with advancing to the 1/4 finals- we won over Brazil after 2 overtimes today and kicked them out of the competition. Let them cry! They should suffer a lot more for things Rivaldo did in 2002. :enjoy:

Hope some more medals will come in the next days. And congrats to Iran.

ps Where is Saudi Arabia? :yay:

They have higher investments in sports(especially from private sector like Adidas), longer history in sports, have more people in referee comiittees, better developed women sports, more equipments, better coaches and better knowledge of using supplements. But we(Turks, Iranians, Azeris) are good in dedication, physics of body, following order and sport programs, ... We need more self-confidence, investment and patience.

lol, I've heard that some people who showed up for olympics parade for KSA were not even saudis and were "rented" to participate in the parade. A saudi "princess" is deported from Brazil, as well.

Most of those things sound like excuses.

I think if the government invested in it more we would win a lot of medals.

We grab gold medals in serious warrior sports which need power and physics, not some silly games which are not worth being called sport.
No doubt, we're physically one of the strongest nations in the world after winning gold after gold in weight lifting and wrestling and we're also the fastest growing nation of the world when it comes to height according to the last research. Still I believe Iran is using the minimum of its potential when it comes to sport. We've more potential, more investment in sport is needed.

There are tons of important sports like swimming, track and field, archery, and tons of other sports that Iran can invest on them. Just cut the fucking budget of soccer loosers and give it to other sports. Then, the medals count can be literally doubled in a decade. I see that track and field sports and fencing have improved a lot compared to 4 years ago.

Correct, and what about women sports, why not gold for Iranian women in weight lifting? So I think we should also focus more on women. And indeed cut the budget for this lazy soccer looser kids and give the money to hard working sportmen and women like the wrestlers, weight lifters, judokas, taekwandokas, swimmers etc.

The combined average height for males and females is higher in KSA for instance alone let alone other Arab countries.

As for having had around 10-15 people who have excelled in marginal sports (worldwide) such as weightlifting (a few weight categories moreover) and wrestling in the past, say 20 years, says nothing about the other 99,999% of the population. The only thing it tells, in the case of Iran, is that there is a tradition of those two sports in Iran and a following. As far as strength goes and size, you will find such people in every country. Then you "only" need to give them the right environment to excel in. In the Arab world, South Asia, Africa, South East Asia, East Asia, Latin America, most of Europe, North America etc. there is simply no strong tradition or following of those two marginal sports. If for instance those two marginal sports had the same popularity in the US or Russia (for instance) and their was this kind of focus (if US and Russia were almost always only successful in those two sports like Iran is) Iran would probably not stand a chance simply due to having a much lesser population pool to pick from and less money to invest in.

Egypt for instance happens to be dominating in squash but that sport hardly has any following (of this size) in the world anywhere outside of Egypt. There are many other of such examples. Hungary for instance, which is a 10 million big country, have won 800% more gold medals than 80 million big Iran throughout history and that is mostly due to them having specialized in marginal sports worldwide such as water polo, canoeing and fencing.

Anyway as far as potential goes, you should not be complaining, as Iran happens to be one of the few countries in the region if not the Muslim world as a whole that has a somewhat strong tradition in a Olympic sports category. In most other countries there is only 1 dominant sport that happens to be football which is the world's most popular sport and where the greatest rivalry exists.

P.S. BTW most weightlifters are using performance enhanced drugs. Similar story when it comes to bodybuilding, strong man competitions etc.

Where did your hear such nonsense? Did the "Supreme Leader" tell you that? Seriously man.

IMHO, Saudi is so pathetic that no one really needs to make anything up to ridicule her. Just look at international news networks in Brazil and you will find tons of news about masterpieces of Saudis.
I think you have burnt that "Majoosi-Rafidhis" Iranians are achieving gold medals while P-GCC with billions of dollars of bribery money and investment cannot get a dick in olympics.
Instead of having the mentality of a loser who hates winners, try to pull up your pants and do something in your country.

Saudi Arabia and most Arab and Muslim countries are indeed performing really badly but that is purely down to lack of investments, restrictions and no tradition for marginal sports. It has nothing to do with any height, strength etc. as Arabs are on average bigger and taller than Iranians.

KSA is not even close to being the worst performing country compared to population size, restrictions (nowhere as harsh as in KSA) and investments (nowhere as restricted due to moronic laws). Not even close. I can mention the achievements of 1.3 billion big India, 200 million big Pakistan, 150 million big Bangladesh to prove my point and COUNTLESS of other examples across the world.

Iran is hardly any world beater when it comes to Olympics. They are not even in the top 50 worldwide.

1.3 billion big China, not long ago, were performing horribly too compared to their population size but in recent decades they have changed that for the better. When they were performing badly nobody, aside from ignorant fools, were talking about genetics as the reason for their bad performances.

Do you think that I am envious of two completely unknown (worldwide) Iranian athletes (who are likely on drugs like most other weightlifters etc.) having won 2 gold medals in total so far in a marginal sport?

An Kuwaiti athlete won the first gold medal of any Muslim/ME country and a few Arab countries have already won several medals.

Also unlike a few Iranians, despite ground realities making such an attitude hilarious, you do not see any Arab here, Israeli, Turk or anyone else pretending to be world beaters.

P-GGC? What is that. Should we call Iran an Gulf of Oman country? Or what about an Arabian Sea country?

The inflated false ego is hilarious to witness. Keep it going.

Iranian women are actually pretty good at Taekwondo and archery. If not in this olympics, I'm sure that they will get medals in the next olympics. The money wasted on soccer is enough to double (if not triple) the budget of all other sports. Also, Iranian soccer did not progress after 1998 that government started to pour money into soccer.
