Microfinance guru Muhammad Yunus faces removal from Grameen Bank

Dr. Yunus does indeed have a very high standing in the West. His successful initiative, lending small sums to impoverished women - especially in countries where men are culturally prone to be lazy or corrupt - has impressed the World Bank for decades. But it was obvious with such stellar results it would be only a matter of time before there would be a reaction to the empowerment of women. If Bangladeshis don't stand in support of Yunus - hard - I predict Bangladeshi economic development will be depressed for decades to come.

Bangladesh Nobel winner Muhammad Yunus is sacked
Bangladeshi Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has been fired from the Grameen microfinance bank he founded, bank officials say.

"Bangladesh Bank has relieved Yunus of his duties... with immediate effect," Muzammel Huq, Grameen Bank chairman, told the AFP news agency.

Correspondents say that the removal of Prof Yunus is the culmination of a long-running feud with the government.

He fell out with PM Sheikh Hasina in 2007 when trying to set up a new party.

That is a big problem with us Bangladeshis! Why do we have to depend on Western prizes for us to have a positive image? Look at China, look at Iran. They have a positive image through hard work and having built their own industries. They don't depend on what the Westerners say to have self-confidence. Iran just sent up a satellite, and it has the highest scientific growth rate. China, I don't need to say anything about them. Why are we such weaklings? Why do we have to depend on the West's congratulations to feel happy about ourselves? Why do we let foreigners dictate our policies? Why don't we take care of our country by ourselves?
Why do we place such a high price on what the West thinks of us? I personally don't give a damn as to what the West thinks of us or any particular BDeshi. In fact, if the West praises a certain BDeshi, I am suspicious of him and don't like him (or more often, her).

@ I think you are living in the world of "Utopian".
