Mi-26 helicopter lifts bulldozers for road construction in Uttarakhand

The Chinook, however, can be transported in the hold of the C-17 Globemaster III, of which India has ordered 10 examples. Boeing says this greatly enhances the CH-47F's ability to be deployed to distant locations.

 And anotherone that falls on Boeing PR, without thinking about it. Buddy, where whill these helicopters be deployed? In and around India! Do we need to transport them in a C17 then? No. So why is it important for Indian forces? It isn't since Indian forces have different requirements than the US or NATO forces, which fights wars far away from their own land and borders.

So what is really important is the lift capability, be it internally, or externaly. The Chinook offers external heavy lift capability, that's the main reason why it is comparable to the Ch53 or Mig26, but the main difference is the internal capacity, where the Chinook was designed to fit to the US requirements with additional tactical roles, while IAF so far benefitted highly from the internal lift capacity of the Mi26.
For externally lifting a Bulldozer, the Ch47 will be as good as the Mi26, but the total performance of external lift capability is lower and the internal lift capability hardly comparable to Mi 17s only.

its MI26 all the way.... Chinooks shoo... :P

But only when the Mi-26 was available for service to the IAF; which was not as much as the IAF would have liked that to happen! :D
Apart from being plainly unsuitable for a good bit of the terrain and the flying conditions that IAF operates in!

Thats a Lame rebut. Its just one of its advantage. And if you think Chinook will not be transported to any other parts India its not a good thinking.

It isn't since Indian forces have different requirements than the US or NATO forces, which fights wars far away from their own land and borders.
The main problem with Mi 26 is it advantage itself. Its too Big for tactical operation. Indian Armed force is transforming itself in to modern force. With C17 and Chinook its total Package for Tactical operation. Its a big advantage we never had before. Chinook is Tactically advanced than Mig 26.

Long-range, covert, infiltration / exfiltration of special operations forces.50 feet long cabin capable of carry up to 45 fully-equipped troops, or 10 tonnes of cargo, or 155mm howitzer, or small vehicles internally or externally on one of three mopunting points, without any structure limit. That`s why the tandem rotors is chosen. At the end of the cabin, the tail of CH-47, there is a rear loading ramp door, easily load or unload the cargo. The small vechiles can be driven out of the cabin by themselves through this door. Two big size side doors are on the aircraft, too. The large payload makes CH-47 an ideal battlefield support aircraft.

Another good point of the tandem rotors is that no tail rotor is needed to counter the torque so that the power efficiency is excellent. But this counter-rotation also causes a problem that the blades must be synchronized to avoid them touching another one. And because the CH-47 is a large size helicopter with a 60-foot rotor span, the effective length of the whole aircraft is up to 100 feet while landing or takeoff.

The CH-47`s maximum airspeed is 185mph which effected by load configuration and circumstance situation. The crew for tactical operations is normally two pilots, one flight engineer and one crew chief.
If you think these are not advantage over Mi 26 then Check this compare "CH-53E can lift 32,000 lbs. and this Mi-26 can lift 44,090 lbs.

I think this article was trying to highlight its overall lifting capacity, not the ability to lift a CH-47 Chinook - they can lift themselves with a lift capacity of 28,000 lbs. and an empty weight of 23,400 lbs." Mi 26 : speeds up to 183 mph and as far as 1,190 miles. Chinook too Speed at 183 mph.

If you Still think Chinook is not better than Mi 26 CHECK THIS OUT ! One more think before you Check Below. IAF and IA is not joking by selecting Chinook over MI 26 When we have lots of experiance with MI 26 ;)

For Dumbo who think Mi 26 is better than Chinook

Any other Question ?

. .

Chinook too can lift chinook.
Reasons why IAF chose chinook over mi-26,not because of quality but chinook is more suitable for mountainous terrain, narrow ridges and all weather duty and IAF will deploy these in mountanous china border.

. .
If we are talking about heavy lift capability alone then mi-26 wins hands down.Like wise if we are talking about actual operational capabilities the chinook score more
A mix of mi-26 and chinook is the best IMO.

.
The best thing is that we have both of them us without Mi 26 and Chinook. :smokin:

.
Its not the only problem. M-26 are Largest yet Very Costlyto maintain. And more over supply of spares parts are not avail. If russia want to upgrade it will cost more for its upgrade on a project which has very less demand. ! Not a good idea .

These choppers are not expensive but expensive to maintain & spare parts issues are during collapse of S.U. but after Russian emerging this issue is already sorted out. If Russia restart this project with upgraded features then demand already grow because every country can't afford Chinook. MI-26's main hurdle in exports is their hefty maintainence & fuel cost, not pilot friendly etc. which I want to sorted out.
