Metro rail to ease plight of Dhaka commuters

.
nice to hear but again we are SA...:( we are hearing abt Karachi Metro since 70s & still the construction is going to start in march 2013:( good for Dhaka peoples i wonder how this most conjested city in the world bear the traffic during construction:undecided:

Please exclude India, don't use the word South Asia.

. . .
LOL...you know, if you wanna be more real, Indians are everywhere.

Indian people would not cross seven seas until recently because of taboos, now you find them everywhere. It was more prevalent in the north than in the south.

Karachi chose Circular Railways over metro and lahore chose metro bus which is much cheaper thn metro and gets the job done by providing cheap transport service :P not bad considering we are in a war and our economical position.

There is Chittagong Circular Railway under-construction and expected to be operational by this March. Dhaka, besides the metro rail, will also get Bus Rapid Transit, the deal is already signed and the construction is going to start this July.

what do you want to prove with these pics?? Dhaka looks like a developed town with few glass claded buildings but infrastructure is not enough to be called as capital city.

edit : Not Needed..thread is about BD

GDP of Bangladesh 110 bn USD
GDP of Calcutta 104 bn USD

This is the city where so many pole vaulters slum together. Why don't you develop the infrastructure and economy of your poor city so that we have less illegals in our cities??

Well, have heard it 100 times from some self proclaimed geniuses, but 110bn is actually the GDP of Bangladesh in nominal terms, in PPP terms it is about 290bn USD, and the GDP which you stated for Kolkata is in PPP terms, the GDP of Bangladesh is higher than not only Kolkata but the entire W Bengal, where the GDP of the latter stands at almost half of that of Bangladesh.

The Statistics Bureau of Bangladesh don't really count city based economies but a calculation by UN reported that Dhaka had a GDP of 78bn in 2008 and was growing at 6.4%, no wonder the growth rate has accelerated and the GDP should be more than 100bn now.

Congratulations Bangladesh. Keep it up. Metro is a must for public transportation for any decent sized city. Around the world any city (with few exceptions) worth a name has a metro system. So Bangladesh should not be behind.

P.S. And now please stop comparing Dhaka with any other India city. The truth is that Dhaka can't even compare with any Tier II city of India forget about comparing with Kolkatta (which is a tier one city). Spend the next 10 years building your city and then we will see with which Tier II Indian city you can compare.

Realistically, Dhaka is just behind Mumbai and Delhi!!

Those are outdated stats. Bangladesh GDP in nominal is about $150bn.

Dhaka not only needs a world class metro but also a couple more flyovers. This will reduce congestion greatly.

Lets see who gets a metro first,Dhaka or Karachi/Lahore.

My bet is on DHAKA.

Metro rail project work to begin at end of 2015: Quader

Communications Minister Obaidul Quader on Sunday said the key construction work for the mega metro rail project will begin at the end of 2015.

And the project is expected to be completed by 2019, he said after a view-exchange meeting with Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) officials at Dhaka South City Corporation Bhaban.

The estimated cost for the Mass Rapid Transit Line-6 (MRT Line-6) is Tk 21,985.07 crore. Of the total cost, Tk 16,594.59 crore will come from donor agencies in project assistance while the government will provide Tk 5, 390 crore.

“We are alert to corruption risks as both Padma Bridge and Metro Rail are important projects,” said the minister. The route of the 20.1km MRT Line-6 stretches from Uttara to Motijheel, dotted by 16 stations.

It would take only 3.30 minutes for the metro rail to go from one station to another while it will take only 37 minutes to reach Bangladesh Bank from Uttara depot, the minister added.

A total of 24 sets of modern trains having six passenger coaches would run on the route, Quader said. He also said Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) has allocated 14 acres of land for construction of its depot which needs a total of 54 acres of land.

The ministry sent a letter to the ministry of public works for allocating the rest of the land for the project.
