Metro: If it was done correctly.

Sir, we need an efficient transport system but the way it has been implemented in Pakistan, it is far from being efficient..rather it cannot recover even its own operational cost and it will remain so in the foreseeable future because we have not addressed the issue. People need to show discipline on the road. For this you need both very strict laws and good education. Metro, the way it has been constructed will never be able to replace the need for cars, motorbikes etc. Here in Sweden, people prefer metro over personal transport especially in the large cities like Stockholm because it not only reaches every part of the city but driving a car can be quite expensive as parking lots are limited and expensive and even there is a congestion tax between 08:00 to 18:00. This discourages people from taking car. Me & my wife both have our own cars and an SUV: three in total for a family of two but we use metros and bicycles more often than cars.
Like I said, strict laws educate people in a way, that's more memorable then any classroom would.

I doubt underground will be more cheaper than above ground, wasn't the Islamabad metro underground?
When you need to built a huge sewage system for the cities anyways, why not built metro while your down there? Let's be honest our cities are running on the 10th century sewage system.

I don't have any idea as I personally haven't research about it, just saw arguments over it on TV when metro was being planned (maybe I misunderstood or knowledge of those wanna be experts were same as mine). But anyway, most of metro rails I have seen are underground, perhaps being underground have more benefits which compensate cost.

the major benefit I think is land saving for other purposes and not cluttering

the sewage systems are not going to be replaced anytime soon

Interesting thread. Question? What do we have in abundance? Uneducated labour. By the millions. Give 100,000 of 90,000 of them shovels. Give 10,000 of them broomsticks.

Now get fcukin digging for 8 hours a day with 1/2 hour break every four hours and 10 ten minute break every two hours. Buy mass dal from farmers and cook vats of the stuff. Feed them. Organize them in works battalions opf 1,000 strong. Dig huge trenches through ever Pak city. Use as sewer lines or underground metro. Use dig and cover method. The British did this 200 years ago in the age of horse and steam. The Romans did this 2,000 years ago. Our forefathers did it 5,000 years ago ffs at Harappa, Mehr Garh and Mohenjo Daro. No high technology needed. Shovel, dal, sweat and young men. Get on with it.

Ps. Lot of the Chinese companies building infra in Pakistan have their roots in the Maoist era of labour battalions using manpower to build huge structure. That is why many of the Chinese companies building roads or railway have military sounding names like China Construction Third Engineering Bureau etc

If I ever became a dictator in Pakistan I would send 90% of Madaris students including their teachers to works battalions. Empty prison send them to works battalions. Anybody idling or engaging in petty crime gets drafted into these works battalions. This is how countries like UK, USA, Russia, Germany, China were built. Hard fcukin graft not pissing around about afterlife etc.

Cut and over underground rail being constructed by hand - London 1850s. They still use these tracks 170 years later.

I think it's supposed to be like a cheap train. More straight lines and no traffic to deal with

. . . . . .
shhhhh, thats un-Islamic talk

It’s a combination of 2.

Our cities are overcrowded because we have not planned new cities, not even that, we expended our major cities with our proper planning.

Lack of parks and playgrounds, Lack of water, no proper drainage system for sewage and rain water. 50% electricity is stolen in commercial and residential areas because there is no system to prevent theft.

Why open a thread and point out faults in a project that has been completed (Metro's in Punjab).

I doubt underground will be more cheaper than above ground, wasn't the Islamabad metro underground?

No. Only a small portion is underground.

I think BRT is a good system. Here in Jakarta people support BRT and we have the longest BRT system in the world. We also have elevated BRT road like in Pakistan. It does need government support in term of subsidy, but overall it is good investment for city development.
