I'm under the impression Kurdish women are getting exploited by a PR campaign aiming to get Western admiration and - with time - practical support. The flood of photo ops showing female - and only female - fighters departing from their families to fight ISIS is evidence. The PKK is being airbrushed as this modern guerrilla, as a bulwark of militant Enlightenment in a backward region where the only fighters appear to be religious, and the Kurds are being passed off as national representatives of post-religious values in a region of budding political Islam. This ignores two things: that this 'modern' PKK has a very recent - even present - record of using children as soldiers, one of the most backward and inhumane practices in warfare; and these 'post-Islamist' Kurds are the one ethnic group in the Gulf - itself hardly a bulwark of Western values - where FGM, a worse form of female oppression than any face veil, is practiced meaningfully.
