AS media has strategic effects i am posting this in this category.
Chronicles of Abu Abdul Samad: Media and Anti Christ
I have been in media since 2007. I have worked in Pakistan’s lowest channel and in Pakistan’s top channels. I started from Royal TV and now I am in Express news. Today when I look back into my career I don’t feel proud for what I did in my career. I admit, I allowed myself to be used by capitalists who own those channels to deceive my fellow countrymen. Indeed, in Pakistani media you have to be without conscious if you want to survive and excel.
Few months ago , when I was AP(Associate Producer) of a Current affairs show, My boss asked me , during editorial meeting about our show which fortunately went on air in my absence due to my sickness. He proudly asked me about my opinion about that show which he thought I saw in my home as a viewer.
The show was based on some story from New York Times. It was a propaganda story based on half facts. As a researcher (My specialization is in Terrorism and Counter terrorism)and a Journalist who likes to study propaganda and propaganda techniques , I knew the facts were distorted and that story was a typical propaganda piece for strategic effects.
I asked my boss if he wanted to hear praise or really want my honest opinion.
He said no- no give me your mind, I want to know how you felt.
I replied sir if the episode would have aired on BBC, Fox or CNN, I would have said it was a good propaganda piece but un- fortunately it went on Air on national television and I feel not good. I mean every media try to promote the national Interests of its country and it’s the primary duty of national media. If media starts promoting the interests of other countries and acts against the national interests then I am sorry media has failed the nation and don’t deserves to be called national media. That’s why yesterdays show made me ashamed.
From that day I was cornered and my primary duty became only to arrange guests for show. I used to sit in editorial meetings only because I was member of teem but I had no say and became out cast.
Concept of Anti Christ , or Dajjal is part of nearly every religion and interestingly the signs of Dajjal or Anti Christ are nearly same in all religions. In Islam anti Christ is called Dajjal. Dajjal means deceiver. As I have understood the concept of Dajjal or Anti Christ from different religions I have under stood that there are three aspects of Dajjal: Dajjal the individual, Dajjal the world-wide social and cultural phenomenon, and Dajjal the unseen force.
Working in a world which is following Capitalism ….and yes capitalism or system of Capital is system of deception in name of earning more and more capital. A capitalist is a person who has enough money but still wants to earn more and more and in his greed is ready to by pass any rules or morality. He has money and power to give trends and mold rules in his favor.
Losing control: global security in the twenty-first century by Paul Rogers is an excellent book and must read, this book (gives ) “…glimpse behind the security screens with sharp analysis of the real global insecurities - growing inequality and un –sustainability” (New Internationalist)
I believe and have faith in humanity. I know most of humans want honest peace full lives. Wars are caused due to greed’s of some in which thousands suffers. Iraq war is the best example. Till now no WMD has been found in Iraq but those who have advocated for the war have earned billions. Nobody has thought how much oil has been stolen from Iraq and how US occupation has again made Dollar by making dollar the main currency for selling Iraqi oil. Or how many billions Military industrial complex in US and Briton have earned on the dead bodies of their dead youngsters and Iraqi or Afghan public.
Ironically its media that has mislead the public for the benefit of these capitalists. All big channels or papers etc are owned by big tycoons. They create issues motivate people to die and kill in name of nationalism , religon or any thing they hold dear.
The world's elite are indeed Anti Christ or Dajjal. Idealism is for fools and realism is how they operate the world.
Coming back to Topic, I am sorry that I am part of Dajjalic system or system of Anti Christ. When I was student I thought via media I will change the world. But when I entered media I soon understood how impotent I was then I got married and soon had son and hell I realized I get more Pay in media then I can earn in other fields.
But now I feel enough is enough. I have decided to change profession. I am fed up of a profession where every day I return with new sense of guilt and when I protest they tell me to be professional.
For example , today when Pakistan is facing worst floods , the channels and media out lets are exploiting situation to build their brand name.
One anchor of our channel who was covering the floods, in her program was impressively narrating the situation and while sitting in a boat in middle of some village many feet’s under water . she was making people sad and few people i know in reality weapt but during her report suddenly when show is on peak she gave link to commercial break.and ugly face of media reveals. Unfortunately the hundreds of thousands earned from the commercials are not for the drowned people they are for the ****** rich capitalist who owns the channel.
Another Anchor who covered flood took two Parados with him both fully Air conditioned. One was used for his journey and other to carry his chilled PEPSI’s and Mineral water. He acted in his show and gave impression that he was the biggest humanitarian but behind the scene it was all different story.
Another anchor of another channel was asking people how they feel losing their children in floods… hell how low are we. In these floods no Channel is working for victims in any sympathy … they are working to cash as much as they can. Alas media is a vulture.
Pakistan is poor country. I have seen in my channel people working for 7000 Rupees (88 $) and that too for 9-12 hours without any medical insurance or facility. If they or any of their family members fell sick they are doomed due to loan which they have to take. A classical capitalist owning media raise funds for flood victims but he never sees that in what condition is own employee are living… may be he never heard that charity begins from home.
One more thing in media which I have realized is that prostitutes have more honor then media men. I remember in one editorial meeting boss said ,:” we have to take class of present government and president in our programs” next week he went to Islamabad to meet president and after returning he told us “ democracy is the best thing... we must give it a chance”
I saw politicians coming to office and very next day clear change in policy. Then I realized that the policy of Channel is its interest no morality or anything is superior to it.
During Eid holidays finally I have decided that I can no longer be part of this dajjali media and be a prisoner of my conscious, media is not for me. Although I have wasted 4 years in media , still it’s not too late. I have a good Master's degree I must go for lecturer ship. I am tring to find job and God willing I will find soon.
As for viewers, media is not something which will ever raise your voice. Unless they feel Masala (spices) in what you are saying. Media sells and cash human miseries.
Our show forced government to change Chief sectary Punjab whose car collided with Late Colonal ® Ikram’s motor cycle because we had intrest but make sure we will never give coverage to thousands who die in accidents with vhecles of other VVIP's. We raised the voice Shazia, an innocent child maid killed by a lawyer in who's house she was working, but then we left when we saw that public was not interested in her death any more and today the killer is free and media dont care.
We have raised millions for flood victims and are distributing the money in victims but if today government ban media to cover flood we will not give a damn to those poor victims because we will not be earning any more.
Media is all about deception all over the world its used to achieve the aims of capitalist.
