WASHINGTON: Republican U.S. Senator John McCain said Saturday that President Barack Obama's limited military action against Islamic State militants in northern Iraq showed a "fundamental misunderstanding of the threat," and called for strikes against the group's positions in Syria, The New York Times reported.

McCain, a frequent critic of Obama's foreign policy including his handling of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, said the airstrikes authorized by the president are not enough to deal with a growing threat to the United States that he called "the richest, most powerful terrorist organization in history," the paper said.

Obama on Thursday authorized the U.S. military to make airdrops of humanitarian assistance to prevent what he called a potential "genocide" of the Yazidi religious sect in Iraq and conduct targeted strikes on Islamic State fighters who have been seizing territory in northern Iraq, a limited operation to protect Americans working in the country.

"The stated purpose - stated by the president - is to save American lives, not to stop ISIS, not to change the battlefield, not to stop ISIS from moving equipment farther into Syria to destroy the Free Syrian Army," McCain said, referring to the Islamic State by one of its acronyms.

"Obviously, the president of the United States does not appreciate this is not just a threat to American troops on the ground or even Iraq or Kurdistan. This is a threat to America," he said.

McCain, an influential Republican voice on foreign policy, said he would favor sending combat air controllers into Iraq to identify potential targets for airstrikes as well as rushing heavy military equipment into Arbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan, the paper said.

He also said he believed the U.S. airstrikes must extend into "ISIS-controlled territory in Syria," the New York Times said.

The Islamic State, an al Qaeda offshoot, controls large parts of Syria and northern Iraq. It has been one of an array of forces fighting the government of President Bashar al-Assad in Syria's three-year-old civil war, but has also clashed with other anti-Assad forces.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights estimates that the Islamic State controls about 35 percent of Syrian territory, although much of that is desert.

McCain said the Islamic State "has erased the boundary between Iraq and Syria," yet Obama "has failed so far to even mention Syria," according to The New York Times, which said the Arizona senator was speaking by telephone from Vietnam.

fuckin' hate John McCain and all the US neoconmen but I agree with him here. This "caliphate" is the US's circus and all these nutcase jihadists their monkeys, they can't just wash their hands off it and let this situation fester.

the US is fully responsible for what is happening now, the least they can do is bomb the IS, their "army" and every single piece of hardware they can spot from the air.

Fake

JEW USA only strike the people attacked by zionist Al Qaeda (Libya)

We all remember how JEW NATO was about to strike Syria twice and was only prevented by Russia

Now nobody prevents JEW NATO from striking zionist Al Qaeda, so why they don't mobilize as they mobilized against Syria?

but the ISIS atrocities are not fake.. I'm all for it if the US wants to bomb them now, why not..

Or Jew USA can just forget about the middle East and let anti Jew USA countries deal with it since they care so much.

I hate Obama, but I'm very glad that this nutcase wasn't voted in.

Why would they stop their beheaders?
they can at least kill some of the beheaders by bombing them. The situation in Iraq is 100% the US's doing, let them waste some more money trying to fix it, if a few terrorists get killed, good.

It was McCain who supported Syrian opposition. Even took photograph with rebels. Now calling to bomb them. What hypocrisy.

JEW USA will never hit them, except 1 or 2 fake videos, because they are their soldiers under their total control.
Zionist Al Qaeda never attack Israel, that proves they are totally under the orders of JEW USA

I agree with this, a handful of artillery pieces and some jeeps is no good.. there needs to be a 24/7 air campaign to wipe out every single piece of ISIS armor/technicals/training grounds/barracks/outposts/checkpoints/ammo dumps.. and they have the capability to do it but it's not looking like they're interested in that.

because they are their soldiers under their total control.
no, but like rats in a catacomb, open this door/close that path.. they are being controlled by the US to do what they want..

also, I wonder if this "humanitarian" intervention bombing to "stop genocide" is actually a way to pave the way for a future campaign against Syria, Assad need to keep his s300s on maximum alert for any US recon sorties etc

Yes, and I also saw a video of him commenting on the battle of Qusayr (Hezbollah vs Nusra, FSA and al-Qaeda) where he referred to the latter group as "WE". If I remember correctly what he said was "We were winning in Syria and then Hezbollah came". Thus McCain is a part of al-Qaeda, Nusra and ISIS. And there are numerous repentant al-Qaeda/al-CIA leaders confirming that the US founded and supported them. I found the interview with former al-Qaeda commander "Sheikh" Nabeel Naiem on Al-Maydeen TV very informative about these relations.

However, I don't think we should be shocked with this sudden "change" in his position. Because we saw the same scenario a lot before. E.g. the USA founded and supported Afghani "Jihadist" groups such as Taliban, later it has fought against the same group which it created. And when it fought, usually it murdered unrelated people and civillians through drone strikes.

And I believe if it happens in Iraq, they won't be targeting ISIS. Rather they will target unrelated civillians. But I hope Iraqi army stops ISIS themselves so that US does not meddle again.
