TEHRAN: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the best age for girls to get married was between 16 and 18, Iranian newspapers reported on Sunday.

Analysts say such announcements could be part of the government’s efforts to gain support among young voters. Iran’s parliament in 2004 raised the legally acceptable age of marriage for girls to 15 from nine.
“The best age for marriage is between 16 to 18 for girls and 19 to 21 for boys,” the Mardomsalari newspaper quoted Ahmadinejad as saying.

The authorities have been encouraging marriage as a way to fight what they call the “spread of immorality among youth.”
Some hardline clerics and lawmakers have warned over increasing rates of divorce.

“Divorces … are increasing. High prices have caused problems for ordinary Iranians,” said prominent hardline cleric grand ayatollah Nasser Makarem-Shirazi on Friday.

Female activists criticize laws relating to women, including those that restrict women’s divorce and custody rights and forbid them from working or leaving the country without their husband’s permission.
A woman’s testimony and life, in blood money terms, are worth half that of a man’s in court. A woman cannot become president.

Activists say women’s demands cannot be put on the back burner in a country where two-thirds of the population is under 30 and more than 60 percent of university graduates are women.

Iranian women have made inroads into politics and business in recent years. Shirin Ebadi, a human rights activist, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003 for her work on women’s and children’s rights in the Islamic Republic.

Well, the point I look in this advice that boys will have to start planning ahead very soon. They will have to plan for their job as they will have dependents. They have study well in order to get a good healthy paying job. All of this will profit the country. It can make post literary ratio very high. And I should remind you guys...this is an Islamic advice. Not Ahmadijejad's. He just announced it.

Actually his idea is quite right as it pertains to what religion recommends.
After all.. those ages have the highest number of hormones circulating.
However.. what he does not take into account is how the poor lad at 19 or 21 is going to give his family a good life unless he takes up manual labour or a measly job.

yes, you need to be financially sound and also mature enough to get married. but what makes you say that marriage is associated with stress? if you have the right partner, understanding between you, and a reasonable job, then it is not a stress, but bless.

My sympathies to Iranian girls

No girl should marry unless they are at least 21...at the very least. A better age would be after 25. This allows them to get a better education and also make informed decisions regarding the choice of their marriage partner.

Women aren't "brood mares." They are people, and should have the 100% right of refusal, and should have the final say on any marriage.

Getting married at 16 or 18 is idiocy. Very few can continue an advanced education while working a job to support a family and wife.

I'm sorry if I offend anyone, but such guidance comes from 1,000 years ago, when all you needed to know was how to farm, trade, or do a simple job. Today's world is vastly more complicated.

Suggestion: Keep your pants on, and open your text book. Are we masters of our own hormones, or do we let them rule our lives? That is idolatry if we give into them.
