Massive blast at US power plant, 'mass casualties' feared

NEW YORK: A huge explosion Sunday at a power plant in the US state of Connecticut has left several people injured and possible fatalities, emergency officials told foreign news agency.

"There was a massive explosion, there are multiple injuries and possible fatalities," said Middletown police office George Yepes.

US media reports talked of "mass casualties" at the gas-fired energy plant in Middletown.

"There was an explosion at a Kleen Energy plant," Middletown Fire Department commissioner Bill Gregorio told the news agency. "There are some," he responded when asked about injuries.

Sounds like an accident while some maintenence was being done-

"Bernadette Nyland told WTNH she was in her yard when the explosion occurred.

"They were doing the firing of the engines this morning and so something went wrong and it blew up and flames came shooting up almost as tall as that stack,"
