Iraqis mourn near body-bags containing the remains of people killed by Daesh in the Iraqi city of Tikrit.

  • UN report reveals more than 200 mass graves in areas previously controlled by Daesh
  • The grave sites are concentrated in four provinces — Ninewa, Kiruk, Salah Al-Din and Anbar
BAGHDAD: More than 200 mass graves have been uncovered in Iraq in areas formerly controlled by Daesh militants, the United Nations said on Tuesday.

The graves contain the remains of thousands of people, believed to be the victims of the hardline militant group, who between June and December 2014, overran large swathes of northern Iraq and declared it part of their so-called caliphate.

The dead include women, children, the elderly and disabled, as well as members of Iraq’s armed forces and police, a UN report said.

The United Nations has said previously that almost 33,000 civilians were killed by the group in Iraq, with more than 55,000 injured.

The grave sites are concentrated in four provinces — Ninewa, Kiruk, Salah Al-Din and Anbar — in the north and western parts of the country, near the border with Syria.

Daesh had entrenched itself in these areas until their defeat in December 2017 by Iraqi forces supported by a US-led coalition.

The United States estimates between 6,000-12,000 bodies are contained in the 202 graves documented in the report. But exact numbers were difficult to establish, it said, since only 28 mass graves have been excavated so far, with just 1,258 bodies exhumed.

These deaths occurred in what the United Nations has called a systematic and widespread campaign of violence, “which may amount to war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.”

During its three-year rule, the group terrorized local residents, conducting well-publicized executions of people targeted for their perceived opposition, government ties, sexual orientation and more.

The militants also targeted members of ethnic and religious minorities, including Christians and Yazidis.

The smallest mass grave, found in Mosul, contains eight bodies while the biggest, the Al-Khasfa sinkhole south of Mosul, is thought to contain roughly 4,000 bodies.

The United Nations said the sites must be protected from interference or contamination to ensure justice and accountability.

But the Iraqi government body tasked with preserving mass graves says it is underfunded and understaffed, and cannot adequately protect and investigate the sites which are still littered with unexploded ordinance.

“Determining the circumstances surrounding the significant loss of life will be an important step in the mourning process for families and their journey to secure their rights to truth and justice,” said UN Representative for Iraq Ján Kubiš.

I bet my money that the majority of the dead are from US bombs and mass executions by Baghdad that, just like in the case of Katyn massacre the perpetrators will blame their enemies

I dont deny the brutality of ISIS but blaming all killings on them is just as pathetic as the when the Soviet executed 10.000 Polish people and blamed the Nazis. Fact is that Mosul was completely destroyed by bombs, just like other sunni majority cities. How many thousands of civilians were buried under the rubble we simply cannot know. But hey we can always blame ISIS for that. Has the government of Baghdad blame them for their own corruption yet?

That's a result of USAF air support, anyway tell me how to liberate Mosul city? Draw up the plan without any airpower, without any artillery. Good luck with that. Turkey cleared 2 middle-sized cities in the last 2 years, one in Turkey held by the PKK and another one in Syria. Both were leveled to the ground.

You're well known to secretly support IS as any operation against them is one you bash, anyway not sure what your point is. Preach it to locals in Iraq, doubt you will get any sympathy. The Sunni-Shia story doesn't fly anymore with locals, they've grown over that.

Poor Iraqis, first US soldiers pissed on them, followed by death brigades and lastly Isis.

Let this be a lesson. say no to Daesh or ISIS. they are the worst Scum on earth right now.

It's a real country where no one wishes to separate except for Kurds, except it's in a state of shit due to years of war, corruption and the current political system.

Other then that you comment like some westerner would comment about Pakistan, muslims killing muslims. Which happened in a country that wasn't even invaded by the US, that only underlines the 'all of them kill each other' even more. Such ignorance from a Pakistani, are you placing yourself in a white man's shoes to write this comment? They say the same about Pakistan.

1 currency although they also trade in USD, like many other regional countries.

There's no applying for a visa, we have the KRG which tries to be its own state. A small cancer which can be treated and gets put in place every time. KRG borders are controlled by federal forces, there's no need to apply to a visa to enter the KRG. The only visa is the one of the central gov

The average Muslim knows little about Iraq's situation, the Sunnistan Shiastan concept was formed by Joe Biden in 2006. Sunnis and Shias in Iraq mix together in marriages and have no desire for a separate state, they identify with the same state no matter what power struggles have occurred and these power struggles are not based on sect, that was just exploited by Zarqawi to wage a civil war.

You can have your opinion all you want it makes no difference to me, i'm simply pointing out the faults in your idea of the situation. Had seperation ever been sought it would have happened in 2004-2008, especially 2007 the height of the civil war caused by Zarqawi's bombing of al-Askari shrine. Yet none of that happened, instead separate nationalist militia's emerged which fought both IS and other factions such as Ansar al Sunnah, Islamic army of Iraq which features the well known juba sniper etc. Weak governance causes this which was the case post 2003, as for the emergance of IS it can be thanked to the US for their Camp bucca mistake and the Syrian situation.

I live thousands of miles away from Iraq. All what i have are news and media reports to rely upon to make an opinion.
