Maruti Gypsy to be phased out as Indian Army books 3,200 Tata Safari Storme SUVs

As Tata Safari Storme will replace Maruti Suzuki Gypsy as a preferred army vehicle, Maruti Suzuki India Limited is reportedly going to pull the Gypsy out of production. Maruti Gypsy will be phased out during the current year while rumors are rife that an all new Jimny will be making its way into the country.

Maruti Suzuki Gypsy, now over 3 decades old, was the only petrol 4×4 on sale in the country. It was ideally suited for use by the Indian Army, paramilitary forces and by off roading enthusiasts. Now, following Indian Army showing more preference to the Safari Storme, this is about to change, bringing in a drastic fall in demand for the Gypsy.

By 2020, India will be shifting to BS6 compliance norms while new crash test regulations are also set to come into place during the current year. Since Maruti Suzuki Gypsy is built on an old platform and sports an older G-13b engine, a new platform and new BS6 compliant engine would be required. Considering high cost this will involve along with lower demand, the company has decided to phase out the Gypsy brand.


Maruti Suzuki Gypsy, currently on sale is BS 4 compliant. It is powered by a 1.3 litre engine offering 80 bhp power and 103 Nm torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via a 4 wheel drive system.


Maruti Gypsy for Indian Army
In comparison, Tata Safari Storme is powered by a 2.2 liter diesel engine offering 156 hp power and 400 Nm torque mated to a 6 speed manual transmission. It also gets an all wheel drive system with low ratio transfer thus ensuring excellent performance in bad weather and bad road conditions thus complying with Indian Army requirements.

This SUV is still built in India? While you have very advance auto industry having several advance SUVs built in India, and Suzuki have not introduced Jimmy there?

Suzuki is milking both India & Pakistan, although I don't like Jimmy SUV specially due to its huge price but its available in Pakistan since few years and Suzuki Potohar (Gypsy in India) is discontinued since long.

This SUV is still built in India? While you have very advance auto industry having several advance SUVs built in India, and Suzuki have not introduced Jimmy there?

Suzuki is milking both India & Pakistan, although I don't like Jimmy SUV specially due to its huge price but its available in Pakistan since few years and Suzuki Potohar (Gypsy in India) is discontinued since long.


Suzuki will replace most of the models soon in India as safety rating is going to be the norm.

All tin cans will get replaced.

This 3,200 unit order is for ONE specific role (General Staff Vehicle, GSV), there are many other roles that the Gypsy is used for right now that will be replaced by other vehicles in the near future.

For instance, the light supply vehicle (LSV) for the general military that the Gypsy is currently used in will be replaced by an LSV that is entirely different to the Storme, my personal favourite is the Mahindra:

Sir the Mahindras have been on test with the Army for close to 5 years now and are extremely out of favor. I will be very surprised if any from that stable gets selected.

It has been 6-7 years since I heard the army will replace the unarmored jypsy ..I don't think the new vehicles will come in coming year.
The only armoured vehicle we have is the aditya ...
Army will keep sending jawans in cheap open unarmoured gypsy and mahindra vehicles

There are different classifications of vehicles used.

Gypsy falls under general one. They are used everywhere. Not just in conflict zones. Gypsy is a highly maintainable equipment. There is no sudden or urgent need to replace these.

The only reason this was still in production was because of the Army. Now that the army no longer wants it, it will go out of production.

I m sure as long as Gypsy's r there they will not induct other vehicles .
Like British uses foxhound,huskey,panther etc
