MARTIAL LAW: INEVITABLE REMEDY TO STOP CORRUPTION IN PAKISTAN

I have a suggestion, why don't learn it from Indonesia story ? We have Independent Anti Corruption Commission (Komisi Pemberantasan Korupsi/KPK). India in the beginning of this year has tried to learn it from us as well and has made a cooperation with our Anti Corruption Body. Hongkong is also quite successful with their Anti Corruption Body. If any one study our Anti-Corruption body, they will have more conviction that Democracy will be able to do something hard for any corruption wrong doing, even if it runs while the current administration is still corrupt. You can see that our ruling party now (democrat) has become half of its power in a current election (April 2014) because KPK is also targeting this party.

This commission has captured so many high end politicians, including the chairman and treasury of democrat party (ruling party) and one chairman from middle level party (welfare party). It has save huge money in oil and gas sector, including capturing the chairman of our oil and gas regulator (SKK Migas). Some judges are also in custody, including our Constitutional Judge Chairman (I think it is a world record).
in Pakistan everyone is corrupt, will the corrupt catch the corrupt? even the army is not free from corruption, everyone knows about the NLC scandal. when musharraf created NAB, many politicians were charged with corruption, many of those allegations may have been true, but once that politician joined musharraf, they got a clean slate.
Only the people have the power to end corruption, if they are not blinded by their beliefs.

This age old fetish of killing politicians and being ruled by military officers (whose salaries are paid by taxpayers) never goes away. Martial Law lovers have a delusion that public servants (army men are servants) will deliver an economic miracle.

Our general lost all wars and half the country. Even the most corrupt politician, say Zardari, is a million times better than these so-called Rommels and Guderians of Pakistan Army.

A nation which wants to be ruled by people whose salaries are paid out of the taxes paid by them, is doomed. Why don't you install your housemaids, butlers or drivers in the parliament. You pay their salaries too!!!!!!!!

We've never had the type of Martial Law other countries had. Real Dictators are the likes of Saddam, not Martial Law administrators like Zia who had great respect all over muslim world (& envy by non) and provided a safe environment for citizens of Pakistan to live in. During Zia's time, opponents did get a hammering, so has been the case in PPP and PMLN rule - no different there!

- Zia's era, I personally know, was a safe Pakistan for children of all classes to cycle miles away from home without parents fearing kidnapping etc. Since the installation of the so-called democracy after his passing, the society has nose-dived. Law and order situation is horrible, gap between poor and rich wider, and so on.
- All major developments in regards to Power and Water, to date, were initiated and completed during military rule
- Pakistanis were well respected and welcomed all over the world during Zia's rule. I've travelled the world and my dad travelled the world during Zia's tenure as well. We know the differences all too well.

PPP and PMLN have done good things, but harmed the country more. Building a motorway and better roads is not everything. Education, Health and Employment were never the top priorities of any elected governments, not even today!

Mahatir, Malaysia's ex-PM, ruled the country with a fist but he gave the people Education, Health and Employment first, before the first big motorway was built from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore in late 90's! I remember the drives from KL to SG between 89 to 96, and we drove through villages on 2 laners. Infrastructure is something that he continued developing but due to high cost associated with infrastructure he concentrated first on sections of the economy to build solid foundations and generation of funds from that allowed him to build even better infrastructure. He did not rely on foreign borrowing (as what the case until PPP came to power after Zia) and by 89 he got Malaysia to Developed Nation status! This is how it should be done. And he was elected democratically!

And during his tenure, 'section 144' was imposed 24/7! No one was allowed to discuss politics in public - an arrestable offence with no bail! His political opponents crushed - jailed indefinitely! And yet both the muslim majority and chinese & tamil minorities love him even today, why? Because he DELIVERED peace, security, and prosperity. And all this after Malaysia had a major bloodbath of civil unrest, where the main river in KL had bodies in it. Our leaders are not even 3rd rate by comparison ...

I'm not pro martial law or democracy, and to me neither Imran nor Nawaz are the solution. I am pro anyone who is honest with unquestionable integrity and has the skills and abilities to ONLY serve Pakistanis and Pakistan.

You cannot blame army in this case. Look at the on-going political affairs. Look who is making mockercy of the democracy process through long march, tsunami, whatever it is.

If the situation goes out of control, then blame goes to democractic political leaders, not Army. Army takeover can be expected if the situation goes out of control. I think army takeover won't be bad thing judging by incomplete political affairs lately.

Then why stop? Why not continue with the economic progress under Martial Law until Pakistan is rich? Martial Law is a disaster, why?
In a Punjabi their is a Saying ( jina laya gali ode nal chali )
Problem is not with Dictatorship or Democracy problem lies with in the nation within people ,
Pakistani Dont care for change they dont vote for the future, ask 10 pakistani living in Pakistan name of their president than we will talk about how much the care for their leaders or what system their are living in
They vote and support their friends , cast , race, groups or for the money if someone tells them democracy is wrong they will go blindly and say yes if someone tells them Dictatorship is wrong they will say yes and follow you check every one yapping , army will overthrow Gov , did army done any thing na new gov came after the elections which was chosen by people Leave that was that blunder or not
and now Imran Khan says People elections were not legit this and that people start following him its Their Favorite past time to blame others

ISLAMABAD - The powerful military establishment played its role in ending the apparent deadlock in the country and succeeded in brokering an unwritten agreement between the rival political parties and none other than Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif was its guarantor.

Well-placed official sources in the federal government divulged Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif played a key role in paving way for a major breakthrough between the government, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief Dr Tahirul Qadri.

The official sources said assurances had been taken from all sides that they would stick to each term and condition of the unwritten agreement.

The military establishment has got the assurances from both the protesting parties, PTI and PAT that their protest would be peaceful and they would not hold sit-in in Islamabad and peacefully disperse after holding the rallies. These assurances came as a result of the other day’s meeting of Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and COAS General Raheel Sharif.

PTI has given the assurance to the government that it will not hold a sit-in in Islamabad and avoid paralysing life in the capital. The
PTI chief would withdraw its demand of immediate resignation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and restrict himself to the verification of election results of some constituencies.

As a result, the ruling PML-N has also given some assurances to the government, including complete electoral reforms and opening of election results of as many constituencies as PTI will demand.

In their two-hour-long meeting with the COAS, all these assurances were taken from PTI and PAT and the army chief is the guarantor from both the sides. He will ensure that no side deviates from their commitments. According to the sources, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif discussed the political situation and the marches of PTI and PAT.

Some defence analysts are of the view that this has also dispelled the impression that the army was behind the present political turmoil. The sources privy to the development claimed that things had been settled and after that the federal government immediately allowed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Awami Tahreek (PAT) to stage their protest freely. Some announcements are also expected from the federal government during this week, the sources claimed.

They also claimed that protesters would neither stage a sit-in in Islamabad nor would they create law and order situation while the government would facilitate them.

According to the sources, both the leaders, Shahbaz and Nisar, were in contact with the prime minister during the meeting with the COAS. They conveyed the wish list of Imran Khan to the PM and a final decision was taken after the approval of Nawaz Sharif.
Later, both of the leaders called on PM Nawaz Sharif and personally apprised him of the consultation with the army chief.

The sources claimed that Imran Khan who was not ready to accept any offer less than the PM’s resignation, would leave Islamabad peacefully while PML-N would be still holding power at the Centre.

It doesn't matter. If the situation gets out of control [several threats according to reports], it is due to long march and inability of democratic leaders to compromise for the stability of Pakistan economy. PMLN is not putting economy at risk, it is Imran-Qadri.
The situation is being forced on PMLN, yet that is not enough that PMLN is already handling multiple crises as we speak.

Army takeover is due to inept politicial affairs.Whether Army takeover is in favor of Pakistan or not, but if this comes to this situation, then Army takeover is in interest in favor of the stability.

Pakistani army is not interferring. If this continues, Pakistan army will be forced. Army takeover means stability. So, stability over instability perpetuated by inept political affairs, Allahu Alim.

I sincerely hope the army steps in and sends NS and his relatives/goons packing and put together a government of national unity full of technocrats who will push through genuine electoral reform, judicial reform and media reform. The technocrat government should also be responsible for investigating and prosecuting the looters of both PPP/PML-N and getting back their ill gained wealth. Once these reforms have been done, then a time table of elections under army supervision should be put forward including local bodies elections.

All looters should be disqualified and constitution amended so that looters and their immediate relatives can never hold public office forever. A presidential system should be implemented and no one can serve more than 2 terms in power including their immediate relative (son/daughter etc). We need to remove the concept of hereditary leadership.

There is a chance now to change the corrupt system, unfortunately everybody seems to want to keep the status quo and let NS compete his term so that Mr.10% can then have his go. This merry go round will carry on and the country will continue surviving like patient on a drip always teetering on the brink. Mark my words, without outside (non-political) interference, vote rigging will happen next time round as well. SC is brought out, so do not expect anything from them. it is extremely wishful thinking that the system will correct itself over time. This is Pakistan not UK or US or even India where supremacy of law happens. The existing system has to be broken and replaced, but it will not happen through the existing setup where the EC itself is appointed by the current ruling party and is politicised.

All politicians are supporting each other under the name of sham democracy and supremacy of parliament manned by crooks and looters. The brought out media with the exception of ARY are towing the line of either PPP/or PML-N.

This is putting the Army in a very tough spot too. And no matter what the Army does, some elements from the political side will lambast it eventually.

The army is the only hope if they step forward. Otherwise expect more of the same ad-infinitum.
