Marketing summit to show 'real' Bangladesh

Dhaka, Dec 6 (bdnews24.com)—There is a huge gap between the reality in and perception about Bangladesh and the first-ever world Marketing Summit (WMS) in Dhaka next year is going to reveal the true picture, an organiser says.
To be held from Mar 1 to 3 at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in Dhaka in association with the foreign ministry, it aims to bring out solutions for the political leadership to strengthen the economy and develop a stable regional and global market.

"We face humiliation abroad as the true picture has not been properly portrayed before the world and we are trying to get the attention of the world through branding Bangladesh," director strategy of WMS Syed Ferhat Anwar told bdnews24.com Tuesday.

World Marketing Summit is an initiative of world's 'most influential marketing guru' Philip Kotler where core focus area will be to find solution to some of the biggest challenges through marketing.

The world has different problems including poverty, food security, education, health and environment, and marketing can be an effective tool to address the problems, Anwar said.

"All these problems are related to Millennium Development Goals and the first summit will focus on the four problem areas and develop a general concept on 'future of marketing'," he said.

GOALS

The summit will follow a strategic map from 2012 to 2015 with a stepwise process.

"It is expected that by 2015, the MDG will see a worthwhile result from this unique marketing effort," Anwar said.

In 2012 the conceptual plan will be finalised based on research findings in eight different locations of the world while in the 2013 summit, pilot results of the initiated plan will be submitted, he said.

"At the same time additional agenda under the MDG will be added."

The final adjustments on lesson learnt from the above will be made to take the projects forward in2014 and in 2015 there will be evaluation of the new marketing paradigm.

WHY BANGLADESH

Anwar said it is professor Kotler's personal choice to launch the programme in Bangladesh.

"When he (Kotler) came to Dhaka, he experienced huge traffic jam in the city but he did not perceive it as a problem rather he saw it as 'energy and development'," he said.

"He had his first experience giving speech to 5,000 students in Dhaka and foreign minister Dipu Moni crushed in a Kotler's programme at the Prime Minister's Office where she was not invited to listen to the professor," Anwar said.

"It moved Kotler very much and he decided that Bangladesh is the right place to launch the initiative."

On Nov 11, foreign minister Dipu Moni had said at a press conference that the summit was expected to emerge as a global platform for the marketing world to exchange views on developing just and responsible marketing practices,.

Kotler had said at the media call that the experts will work towards finding solution to these challenges and solutions found will be piloted in incubators through academic institutions before upscale for general public.

The uniqueness of the summit, according to him, lies within the proposed incubators, which will be used as the centre for experimental projects coming out of the summit addressing the critical areas.

Each 'incubator' will be spearheaded by academic institution of the country selected for field execution and will be supervised by another academic institution. Bangladesh will work as the coordinating country for all the incubators.

Each of the incubators will have several contributors as in corporation, development organisation, research agency, communication agency and media. The summit will feature leaders from diverse sectors like science and technology, marketing, entrepreneurship, development, academia, health, media communication, environment etc, he added.

Well done. Good to get some attention towards the local businesses and to generate interest and influence via Kotler. Important though that this does not become one of his own fancy babies like the disaster that Dubai turned out to be, but rather this must becomes a sustainable development story for Bangladesh businesses.
