Marcin Jakubowski: Open-sourced blueprints for civilization

I like the idea of a single dvd with blueprint for everything that civilization needs(with a printed copy of how to make a dvd player).
But I am a bit skeptic of DIY for everything. Will it really be as efficient as commercially available products? What will happen to the jobs lost due to such self made tractors. I am fine with them living along with commercial one though (like linux lives along with solaris and windows)

Open Source is actually better than many commercial products esp. in the software industry. After reformatting my laptop a few weeks ago, I decided not to install any commercial software and only go with open source or GPU/GPL ones. I have no viruses and trojans from pirated applications and my free anti-virus (AVG) is actually a bit better than the paid one that came with the laptop.

Another example is Ubuntu which is growing at blistering speeds and poses a threat to the giants (rhymes with Indo).

So I'm sure that open source hardware is going to be just as good as most commercial ones but definitely not all. This guy is really going to open some eyes and make the world's resources last longer while we live a better life at a lower cost.
