Map: The best places in the world to be a rich foreigner - The Washington Post

By Ishaan Tharoor October 22
This year's iteration of HSBC's annual ranking of the best places to live as an expat, published Wednesday, ranked 34 countries on a host of indicators, such as salaries earned, the expat's quality of life and an expat family's ability to raise kids abroad. The full rankings are in this chart below. Switzerland tops the list overall, with Egypt coming last.

year before. Over a quarter of the expats HSBC polled earned more than $200,000 annually, but also maintained a better work-life balance than in their home countries. Switzerland's beautiful scenery and lack of air pollution is a plus, with vast majorities of expat parents there saying their children lived safer and better lives than in their previous home, according to HSBC's press release.

Perhaps more interesting is the growing draw of Asia for the expats surveyed, with its booming economies presenting lands of opportunity for expats from all over the world. "Asia emerges from this year’s survey as the best region for financial wellbeing, with nearly one fifth (19%) of expats earning over USD200,000 p.a. and 65% saying they have more disposable income since relocating," says HSBC.

The rankings look rather different when you separate the findings by category. Asian countries may account for terrific remuneration, but not necessarily the greatest living experience. You'll note China is not in the top 10 countries for raising children. Many expatriates, particularly those living in Beijing, the smog-clogged Chinese capital, fear the long-term effects of the country's air pollution on their kids.

an interactive that rearranges the rankings on the basis of various criteria that you can sort and toggle, ranging from an expat's ability to assimilate to a local culture to his or her satisfaction with the country's economy. The report is connected to HSBC Expat, which provides off-shore financial services to clients.

This likely influenced the profile of the expats surveyed for the study. The scores for China and the U.S. probably don't take into account American immigrant diasporas, nor the hardships faced by a growing community of petty merchants from Africa and other parts of Asia trying to eke a living in China.

Strange list IMO. Surprised by Bahrain (5) being placed so high on that list. Egypt number 34?

Spain as number 24? Must be a joke. Vietnam? Really? India as number 9? Really?

No Scandinavian country in the top 34? Really?

Anyway nice that the GCC is very well represented on that list nevertheless. Such lists are always controversial anyway.

you need to see the criteria used to come up with the list before questioning the list.. lolz. Did you just read the thread title?

Absolutely genius post. Of course I read the criteria. Still does not make much sense in my eyes. I don't see any detailed data about each country either and why the order ended up as it did. Some of those countries don't make much sense. That I can tell already without reading any report. There are tons of such reports out there all with very different results. Only some familiar countries are always "up there".

This list is moronic as it has no single Scandinavian country in it despite that region of the world having the highest HDI scores on average, being the most safe societies on the planet, having the strongest social sector, best public sector (and biggest ones) ideal for raising children and some of the highest salaries in the world.

Do you even know anything about the current economic situation in Spain? The youth unemployment rates are 50% for instance. Overall unemployment rates are around 25%. Low salaries, relatively weak social sector.

Can you explain to me why Egypt is placed 34? Or India as 9? Or Bahrain as 5?

Where is Austria for instance?

So much wrong with this list.

which is why I think you should consider reading the post first. This list is specifically for high earning 'expats' who are not natives of the country. How is the quality of life of such expats compared to other countries.
Can you read again and see whether it makes sense, using the parameter author used. It still might not and author could be wrong.

Just so you know, spain hosts a massive expat population. Many european will prefer spain to scandinavian country to settle in.. just for weather.. :p:

I STILL get that but obviously a high HDI score, a strong and FREE social sector and a safe environment for the upbringing of your children are very important parameters let alone the overall standards of the country. I am sure that rich people can survive everywhere but some things you can't buy with money and those above are some of those things.

The taxes are high in Scandinavia but on the other hand you have some of the highest salaries in the world and free healthcare etc. In general a highly developed social sector if not the most developed. So rich people live extremely good lives in Scandinavia and have nothing to worry about.

That's why I think that this list makes little sense on SOME of the choices of those countries. That there is no Scandinavian country on the list is a joke. Quite simply.

Spain hosts wealthy Arabs and mainly British elders that have relocated to Spain or own property there. Rest of the expats are poor migrants from Latin America or nearby Morocco.

The reason why relatively poor countries shine in this list, is because for an expat, his/her disposable income is increased instantly as soon as he/she relocates to such countries.
Higher level unemployment will ensure low labour cost which lowers the cost of living. If the country has decent law and order situation, its not a stretch that an expat will prefer such country.
HDI is not everything in expats point of view. How easy is to assimilate with the local culture there? How multicultural and welcoming those countries are for expat? How is the weather like?
Will I have a better or worse day to day life there?
