Maoists support ‘Independent Kashmir’ demand

India's Naxalite insurgency: Not a dinner party | The Economist

On February 15th the Maoists stormed a camp, killing 24 Bengali police. The government estimates that they have influence in over a third of India’s 626 districts, with 90 seeing “consistent violence”. According to the Institute for Conflict Management, in Delhi, the insurgency cost 998 lives in eight states last year—compared with 377 lost in the better-known conflict in Kashmir.

Up to 40% of India's land area, with one-third of the population, is subject to some sort of Naxalite activity. This is especially so in the poor, eastern part of the country, where post-independence elites in the west, to whom such rural regions have been economically unimportant, have historically paid little attention.

some sort of naxalite activity ?? lol....yes they move around there...just like any other citizen.

Guys... let the Pakistanis have some thing to be happy about India... why ruin their dreams.

Yes yes Rafi... 1/3rd of India is gone to the Maoists... 1/3rd gone to Kashmiris... OMG we have only 1/3rd left for the rest of us. I feel claustrophobic now.

Its soothing to see India relaxed on the issue of Moists because the longer they get, the deeper they would penetrate. Although I do not want to make you sad or put a cap on your "Laughing Out Louds", the picture of Moists indicates they are pretty well in controll of good part of India already. Have a look what Forbes say. (Reference URL)

Are you looking at those new pockets emerging in Central and South India as well.. Good for Indian Federation I hope!

A Short Note: this insurgency map was made in May 10, 2010 and this is showing extended influence of Moists than what BBC used to show in year 2007. So please keep sleeping longer.. Thanks.

Subject to some sort...? Roughly the same as saying that every part of Europe is subject to some sort of attack from Islamic terrorists! Means squat!

I think compared to what pakistan is facing today..in terms of violence...you have a bigger reason to be worried about your situation than warning others on their internal issues....even if I agree to the above map..which I know is wrong...it no where proves that these areas are controlled by maoists....so its rather time for you to wake up.

I come from one of the deeper red zones that you see in the map... and let me tell you I am at a much better position to understand their cause compared to you sitting on the internet and looking at a color coded map. The color codes are given according to the presence of maoists or maoist related incidents happening in a particular district. Does not denote the mandate of the population or their sympathy towards their cause.

Their movement is just to have the landless people get right to cultivate on their own without having to work for the thekedars or zamindars. Their movement has nothing to do with demanding to break away from India or anything like that. Sorry to flush your excitement down the drain.

Yeah, it is soothing. Considering our growth rate, sooner or later this movement will die out because of the availability of opportunity for economic advancement. Such movements flourish only as long as that opportunity is denied or absent for some people. That doesn't augur well for the problems in your country. As far as Maoists in South India, they have pretty much been wiped out in Andhra Pradesh & other pockets showing maoist activity in places like Karnataka are laughable. Such maps are pretty much useless; they indicate nothing. A comparable map of Pakistan would show the whole country painted Taliban green(any colour of your choice) even where there have never been any attacks.

.
Lol..the map also shows Hyderabad in Red..and even tamil nadu..lol..so whats next mumbai and bangalore.
