The parents of a 33-year-old man flew from India to Florida to beat his wife after he told them she was disobedient, police said.
Devbir Kalsi was arrested Saturday along with his parents Jasbir and Bhupinder Kalsi, after deputies found his wife Silky Gaind severely bruised all over her body.
Gaind was beaten, held against her will, and on one occasion, threatened with a kitchen knife by her 67-year-old father-in-law, according to the arrest report cited by WUSA.
Kalsi asked his parents to help “counsel and discipline” his wife for being disobedient, and the Indian nationals flew to their Riverview home outside Tampa, with police saying the abuse had been going on for "an extended period of time."
When an argument broke out between Devbir Kalsi and Gaind on Friday, he hit her repeatedly before his parents joined in, the arrest report stated.
They also accidentally hit Kalsi and Gaind’s 1-year-old baby at one point during the fight, the report stated.
Gaind was eventually dragged into another room and held against her will, police said.
When she called her own parents in India to tell them about the beating, they notified the police, who showed up at the home at 6:30 a.m. Saturday.
No one came to the door when a deputy with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office knocked, even though they had confirmed the family was at home.
At one point, Gaind tried to open the door and “screamed for the deputy to save her and her child,” the sheriff’s office said.
Her husband tried to shut the door, but the deputy eventually forced his way in and arrested him and his parents.
Devbir Kalsi faces charges of felony battery, false imprisonment, child abuse and denying access to 911.
His father faces multiple charges including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, while his mother faces charges of battery domestic violence and failure to report child abuse.
Gaind and her child have been moved out of the home and into a safe place, the sheriff's office said.
