ISLAMABAD: Jamaat-ud-Dawah chief Hafiz Muhammad Saeed appeared to lose his cool on a TV talk show on Thursday when parliamentarian Mani Shankar Aiyar questioned his contention that Indians did not accept Pakistan, and said he should be arrested and brought before a terrorism court.

The host of the show suddenly introduced Saeed, the alleged mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, on a phone link while Aiyar was in the studio in Islamabad with another panellist.

Responding to a question from the host, the founder of the Lashkar-e-Taiba listed his reasons for opposing improved trade relations with India and the granting of most favoured nation-status to the neighbouring country.

"Giving India MFN-status is not correct in any manner because there are already big problems that haven't been resolved, including the Kashmir issue.

"At this moment, the dams being made by India will create a crisis in Pakistan," Saeed claimed.

Saeed further claimed he had "never opposed talks" with India but the neighbouring country "has never seriously tried to resolve problems".

Aiyar, currently on a private visit to Pakistan, responded to this by saying that Saeed was part of a "small group" that opposed better ties with India while ordinary people wanted relations between the two countries to grow.

"There are some persons like Hafiz Saeed in our country who do not want things to move forward but thankfully the ordinary people want our ties to improve. We can improve our relations irrespective of what his (Saeed's) opinion is.

"We want him to be caught and taken to a terrorism court," Aiyar said.

What do you mean by "recognise"? In political terms, it means you acknowledge the existence of something. Like "recognising israel's right to exist" means admitting that israel has a right to exist. Now the existence of hafiz saeed is not something that anybody can deny, is it? Whether Mani Shankar Iyer admits it or not, that person exists.

Talking with him on a television show does not imply that he recognises hafiz saeed's views or activities to be acceptable, if thats what you meant.

First of all, it is stupid to let a guy like Hafiz Sayeed talk in a discussion with sane people. What point can he bring out to support what he does? For god's sake, he is a terrorist! The only people he is worthy of talking to are with the likes of Mr Assistant and Rickshaw Driver here on PDF.

I don't understand wht Pakistani mean when they say " u didn't tried to resolve Kashmir". coz by "resolve" they mean decision favouring them or anything that can hurt India.

Actually if somebody care to see their relation with anyone, u will notice tht for having a "good relation" with Pakistan. 1 u need to provide them weapons...2. then they ask for soft loans..& u have to oblige it...3. then probable they default giving egs. like Russia, Poland and Latin america...then u are the most pious soul on earth.

I don't understand why Indian Govt. Even bother to talk to them even.

did you read the article completely ? he was not having a warm and cosy discussion about changing climatic conditions he was openly saying on a pakistani channel that hafis saeed should be tried and jailed in India for his role in terror in India.

of course we recognize them . and made the world recognize them as a terrorist outfit.
and from the article it seems they sprung sayeed on him without warning . it would have been churlish to not speak or answer him . and Mani is a lot of things but bad mannered he is not.
