Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL) has a new human resources leader, after the former HR director quit in April.
R. Srinivasan became the new HR chief on Sept. 30 and will hold the position until his retirement in May 2011. Srinivasan was the managing director for HALs Helicopter Complex and is returning from an extended medical leave.
There also are reports emerging on the future of D. Shivamurti, whose tenure as finance director comes up for renewal this month. HAL directors are reviewed every five years.
The changes at HALs top management are monitored very closely, Indian defense ministry sources tell AVIATION WEEK. The state of affairs and happenings are certainly not what we want, and we are watching it closely, a senior ministry official says.
HALs previous HR director joined a private firm without receiving the required clearance from the Indian defense ministry. The post has been vacant ever since.
Insiders say Srinivasan has a big task cut out for him, considering HALs poor HR record and a string of failed policies. The company has found it tough to retain talent owing to the demand for skilled aerospace engineers and technicians in the private sector. Although a wage revision was enacted across the company, an average of one resignation per day comes up for processing by the HR department.
The new HR head will have to focus his attention on talent attraction and retention considering the crisis at the middle-management level. He will also have to put his energies behind bringing in some unified practices in HR across the company, says one insider.
Following Srinivasans departure, planning and marketing head P.S. Rajan was put in charge of the Helicopter Complex, a dual position he still holds.
The hunt is on now to find a suitable man to head the marketing and planning operations so that Rajan can focus on HALs chopper projects, a source says. The post for design and development head also has been advertised, since the current incumbent will retire in June 2011.
Amid all these internal changes, HAL chose not to formally announce the appointment of the new HR leader, which is a deviation from the norm.
