Odisha Police on Saturday arrested a man for allegedly attempting to rape his daughter-in-law and set her on fire.

The incident took place in Rairangpur town of Odisha's Mayurbhanj district. The accused has been identified as Gopal Khemka.

The police arrested Khemka from Jamshedpur after the father of the victim lodged a complaint, on the basis of which a case was registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

According to the police, the person attempted to rape his daughter-in-law when no one else was at home and then set her ablaze after dousing her with kerosene in a bid to conceal his crime.

The woman sustained about 70 per cent injuries. Her husband also received burn injuries while trying to save her.

Both were initially admitted to a hospital in Rairangpur and later shifted to Tata Memorial Hospital in Jamshedpur as their condition deteriorated.

i was of a view that such type of medieval punishments were necessary in today's context, however the impunity of rapists n potential rapists make me think that you are wrong after all.
also to be mentioned is:
1. no innocent get caught in this kind of punishment, which is impossible.
2. most of the rapes are committed by those who think they can escape the law ie ones having political connections. and the ones they do, are very hard to catch n do all the things you mentioned.
3. its also most important that, in the name of instant public judgement; an innocent n framed political opponent is not killed to drive a point.

You can't stop all rapes. Rape happens in Japan as well. Everywhere, you don't even need women to rape. Can't stop something like crime. Its not as problematic as Haiti or Somolia though for the Indian context. What we are seeing is reporting of which did not happen as frequently before as often. Education/religion play a major role in curbing rape, both have a different approach and in some cases similar. Majority of rape is done by husbands and people in close proximity to the victim. Harsh punishment will only reduce the rape cases slightly and can mislead the justice to rapist whom may have not committed actual violent rape. What stops rape, and public abuse would be security. Media talking about it, and more approachable law enforcement may reduce rape in households.

I agree, them Indians will suffer the most. Just like going after prostitutes. Because you know. Majority of the worlds prostitutes are Chinese women from Bangkok to Dubai to london. But not all Chinese are prostitutes. We wouldn't wanna label people prostitutes do we?
