Mamata now opposes enclave exchange

After the Teesta water-sharing issue, Paschimbanga chief minister Mamata Banerjee has taken stance against a Dhaka-Delhi agreement to resolve the long-pending issue of exchanging enclaves held in adverse possessions, reports Indian newspaper Anandabazar Patrika.

The Indian parliament is yet to ratify the landmark agreement, signed during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Dhaka in September last year, on enclave exchange largely due to the absence of a consensus on the issue, the newspaper said quoting official sources.

Efforts are now on to secure Mamata’s consent on the agreement on exchange of enclaves that would help bring down the curtains on a major irritant that has been there in India-Bangladesh ties since 1974, our New Delhi correspondent reports.

Just prior to the Indian PM’s arrival in Dhaka on September 6, Mamata Banerjee took stand against the Teesta water-sharing deal which was almost set to be signed during Manmohan’s visit.

Manmohan had to backtrack from translating the long cherished dream into reality, putting a strain in the bilateral relations.

The opposition of Mamata-led Trinamool Congress, a key ally of India’s ruling UPA coalition government, would further create frustration to people living on both sides of the border as the Indira-Mujib accord on the issue had remained unimplemented all these decades.

Since Mamata’s objections prevented the signing of Teesta river water-sharing accord in September last, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is not willing to go ahead with the ratification of the deal on exchange of enclaves without a consensus, Anandabazar Patrika said in the front-page report.

Main opposition BJP too has opposed the agreement signed by the two countries on exchange of enclaves.

The agreement on exchange of enclaves stipulates that the people residing in the enclaves would have the option to choose either India or Bangladeshi nationalities as per their will.

Opposing this, BJP said along with exchange of enclaves, there should be exchange of population irrespective of the wishes of the people residing there, the daily said. Given all this, India is proceeding cautiously on the exchange of enclaves, the report added.

The newspaper quoted an unnamed Indian External Affairs Ministry official saying, “We are optimistic. We are committed to an international treaty. We will get around the small stumbling blocks and take the next step.”

Nahhh.. the people living inside Indian enclave in BD territory have no intention to move to Bharata...

We already oppose exchange of enclaves... something which came in when BNP came to power and asked it out of the blue. It was this nonsensical government that encouraged this disloyal anti-national move... and now it goes down the drain thank goodness.

Wht exactly is the reason for opposing. Why do yu want your citizen to stuck in enclave like a jail?

. . . .
enclaves need to be exchnaged and indian population needs to come to India and people living in bd enclaves in india must be sent to bd....

we did a grave mistake of not doing so during partition..the same mistake must not be done again....if land is given so should be the population...

This is not being reported in any other press in India. So it may need reconfirmation. IF she was opposed to it, it would have been raised earlier like the Teesta water treaty.

Whoever, opposes this exchange encalve is being an idiot. Except for the BJP no one has opposed. Even when they tried to raise this issue in the Assam elections, BJP lost its seats from 12 going down to 5. This shows that their is popular support from the public on this issue as well.

If this news is true, this another move of Mamata in a long list of anti-national moves from opposition to FDI, oppostion to cutting subsidised fuel, and resolving border issues with BD. Its like she wants illegal immigrants to continue. In W. Bengal, we have govt. now which is more leftist than the communists who were in power.

People who live in W. Bengal and Assam will benefit immensley as well the Bangladeshis once the border issue is resolved. For anyone who knows how the enclaves are setup, the agreement is a no brainer and its time this is implemented.

What did we learn from this episode kids??

Never elect or put women in power. Applies for all countries

What I read in Anadabazar that it's all speculative, probably Mamata wants full detail of the treaty or something. I haven't heard her speaking against the deal.

Populist is a more apt word.

Dil Mera , dard Tera !

BjP is right in assuming the fear that people of Both the enclave would choose India.

Mamta basically opposes everything by default, unless she is convinced that she has to support it.
This is how left used to be, but Mamta is the new left.
If something goes wrong, she can say "I told you so", and if it okey nobody will remember the opposition.

Although, Mamta Banerjee emerged as villain from Bangladeshi point of view however I respect her for nationalist stance, especially with Teesta water agreement. This kind of qualities absence within Awami league, especially la-hasina. I spit on the faces(tu bey) of Awami and it's supporters. Lanat on you low lives and learn something from your Mamata didi.
