ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Rehman Malik has said that he ordered the closure of the US Anti-Terrorism Assistance Programme (ATAP) camp working in the Police Training College Sihala as I care for the people of my own country, not the United States.
He said that he didnt care if the US gets annoyed by his decision of shutting down the camp. The interior minister said he wanted to satisfy the people of Pakistan, and not anybody else. He said that he faced criticism, which was the spirit of democracy.
He said the people kept targeting him but never thought that the police training college where the US camp was established was located in the jurisdiction of the Punjab. Why did the critics ignore this reality and avoid censuring the Punjab government for allowing the setting up of the ATAP camp, he asked and said that the facility was established in 2003 by the Musharraf regime.
Following a comprehensive monitoring of the activities of the US officials, Pakistans intelligence agencies warned that the ATAP camp had been found monitoring activities in the Kahuta nuclear site.
Concerned authorities may be asked for a joint survey of the ATAP camp by incorporating technical experts to assess if any interception equipment to detect radioactive rays has been installed at the facility, the report said.
The ATAP base camp was located nine kilometres from the KRL and housed within the premises of the Sihala police college. Even the commandant of the college was not allowed to go there. The US embassy in Islamabad, however, denied misuse of the premises of Sihala college facility.
