KARACHI: Bahria Town Chairman Malik Riaz announced, Wednesday, the beginning of Clean Karachi operation that would cost Rs10 billion.

Mayor Karachi Wasim Akhtar appreciated Bahria Town’s Chairman Malik Riaz’s initiative to take part in the efforts for bringing an improvement in Karachi whereas the Bahria Town chairman offered Rs10 billion support for public welfare works in Karachi.

In an MoU signing ceremony held in the KMC building, Mayor Karachi Wasim Akhtar, on behalf of KMC, and Malik Riaz, representing the Bahria Town (Pvt) Ltd., signed the agreement for removal of backlog of garbage from the city of Karachi. The documents were exchanged and the mayor Karachi gave a shield from the KMC to the chairman of Bahria Town.

Under the agreement, KMC will take the lead role through its mayor to remove the backlog of garbage with the assistance of M/s. Bahria Town. The total generation of garbage in the city is approx.13,000 tons/ per day and the capacity of DMCs to remove the garbage was 40pc, resulting in an increase in daily backlog. The estimated backlog all over Karachi, both in rural and ubran area, is around 1,100,000 tons, which would be disposed of with the help of Bahria Town staff and machinery.

KMC/DMCs will participate in this campaign through their available expertise and manpower. Both the parties shall coordinate and cooperate with each other to make the living better.

The mayor Karachi, while addressing the ceremony on the occasion, said KMC and Bahria Town will begin this drive after Eid-ul-Azha from District Central and other districts would also have similar activity after completion of work in District Central. He said all the district chairmen and elected representatives would also participate in the exercise.

The mayor Karachi thanked the chairman of Bahria Town for his concern about the Karachi city and said he had been helping the Karachiites through his active financial support in their hour of need. He said no payment will be made to Bahria Town for its contribution in the removal of garbage backlog from the city and they had agreed to volunteer for this work.

The mayor Karachi said he thought no solid waste management board or rules would be intercepted by this work as they were only doing removal of garbage, which caused immense trouble to the citizens of Karachi. He said this agreement was for only removal of backlog garbage in the city and in order to make the efforts sustainable on long term basis, the Government of Sindh should come up with financial support and administrative measures, for which he offered all sorts of cooperation and guidance to them.

The chairman Bahria Town in his address said he was asked by former President Asif Ali Zardari to assist mayor in development of Karachi. He said he was ready to provide any support and cooperation to the mayor Karachi in his endeavors to make the city of Karachi a better city for living. He said if the mayor Karachi handed over any hospital or school to them, they would happily manage and run it in a better way or if they asked them to take up the work of any road, they will do this immediately.

Regarding a query about Bagh Ibne Qasim, he said it was only due to some misunderstanding that people said whatever they thought about the issue but the fact was they were not going to take the charge of the park and only playing their role in making it better. Now, he said, the mayor Karachi was doing this job and they were with him in this connection.

Deputy Mayor Karachi Dr. Arshad Vohra, DMC Central Chairman Rehan Hashmi, DMC East Chairman Moeed Anwer, DMC Korangi Chairman Nayyar Raza, former town Nazim Izhar Ahmed Khan besides city council’s parliamentary leader Aslam Shah Afridi, chairmen and chairperson of the city council committees, KMC officers and others were also present on the occasion.

Wait, so Malik saab will spend Rs 10b to clean Karachi? Why he needs to do that and from where he get all that money.

Thats good news, but after they clean up the back log, then what? The DMC can only remove 40% of 13,000 tons daily. That still leaves 7800 tons daily trash that is not collected. We will be back to square one again after a couple of weeks.

Thats a great effort to make irrelevant Wadera group govt and directly involved Mayor of city to give him task. Hope wish and pray Karachi get rid of Waderas in next elections.
The MQM has been in power with all the parties with pretty much full control on Karachi and they did nothing and without establishing recycling plants you can't deal with this mess

Either you don't know politics or you are naïve. MQM has never been given full control except in Musharraf era where Karachi's progress was alarming. Have you seen the budget allocation of Karachi. That proves what Karachi has been going through. I don't support anyone. But get your figures correct.

Yes Malik sb will spend PKR 10B for this endeavor. But I have a feeling that somehow, Malik sb will end up with PKR 20B after he is done with it. I don't know how. But I do know that for sure Malik sb will somehow double his money and will leave some very happy Government employees, politicians, judges and generals in his wake.

Just wait and see.

Why don't we just export all of this trash for $$$?

Or make electricity with this trash for Karachi only?

Thats not the case brother ... it was never on priority ... had this been issue effecting altaf directly then would they had same response ... mqm could have done it as a community service with their own resource ... at that time there was not single lane with mqm workers .. they could have mobilize people ... but this not about service but to get the gov and to have commissions
