MALI: Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen on Sunday warned India's foreign minister against external interference in the islands' affairs, his office said, as international pressure mounts to release his jailed predecessor.

The president told Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj that all nations should respect the Maldives' sovereignty, during her official visit to the capital Male to strengthen ties between the Indian Ocean neighbours.

“President Yameen stated that this government will not tolerate foreign parties to interfere with the country's domestic issues,” his office said in a statement.

Yameen also “underscored that a country's integrity and national sovereignty must be respected by all”, the statement said.

Yameen made no reference to the controversial conviction this year of former president Mohamed Nasheed, the country's main opposition leader, and his jailing for 13 years on terrorism charges.

Washington and others have strongly criticised his trial and a UN panel ruled last month that Nasheed's jailing was illegal and that he should be freed immediately.

Swaraj released her own statement on Sunday at the end of the two-day visit, without mentioning Nasheed or the president's comments.

India spoke of strengthening ties and increasing defence cooperation with the Maldives, which is located across strategic international shipping lanes in the Indian Ocean.

The visit comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi skipped the Maldives during his trip to Indian Ocean nations earlier this year as Nasheed was thrown in jail.

Last week Indian foreign affairs spokesman Vikas Swarup told reporters that New Delhi expected a “fair and just” resolution to Nasheed's jailing.

Supporters of Nasheed, the archipelago's first democratically-elected leader before being toppled in 2012, have maintained the conviction was part of a strategy by Yameen's regime to silence him.

The resulting political fallout has damaged the island's image as an idyllic honeymoon resort and brought crowds of protesters onto Male's streets.

It was a UN panel which ruled that Nasheed's jailing was illegal, not India. We should not have a rigid stance- suggest but don't demand a political solution. Whether Nasheed is free or not is of no consequence to us. Terrorism and security are top priorities and we need a leader who can work with us. Don't want a seaborne attack like Mumbai- from Maldives. Also in long term- to counter China's influence.

LOL..Yameen,whose brother's(Gayoom) @r$3 we saved during 1988..

By the way,I don't know why India is even bothered to save Nasheed..He is a Chinese Sympathizer.During his rule,he tried to play his "China Trump",and when he faced arrest, took refuge in Indian Embassy.

Why our entire neighbourhood is like this??Even Yameen took India's moral support during election.

India has a habit of interfering with neighboring states affairs. It's about time that they all have started to speak up, i guess the impetus here is China's rise as a much balanced and broadly accepted power in South Asia. Indian dream of being the "regional power" seems to be diminishing a little too quickly.

India is already a regional power and contributes 80% of the South Asian economy. India interferes in others internal maters because India has the power to do so. Neighbours may be annoyed for some time but in the end they all fall in line.

Maldives is under Indian security control, we are installing radars in their islands. Nepal has a treaty with India which allows India to interfere in its foreign affairs. Bhutan and Afghanistan, well I don't have to elaborate on that one. Ties with Bangladesh is at their very best now, Modi mocked Pakistan from Bangladeshi soil and he was greeted with applause from the audience.

It's not just about Maldives------------Maldives is just one country standing up for itself against the regional bully. Secondly posting 1000 pointless links wont make Maldives warning to India go away. Try something else, Okay!

Nice little story-----------If only it wasn't a total fantasy.

Because China's neighbours are all perfectly content in its rise? This is what happens when a nation is so overwhelmingly more powerful than regional nations, it is some sort of inferiority complex.

Having said that, all these nations like to bemoan India's actions but when they need help who do they call for help? Bhutan has an Indian military training team deployed year round to assist them, Nepal relies on Indian aviation assets deployed in the East of India for operations that are beyond their capability (don't even need to mention India's relief missions launched for them earlier this year), Maldives requested Indian military intervention in 1988 when circumstances went beyond their control(OperationCactus), Sri Lanka requested assistance to help with their internal issues(IPKF) etc etc the list goes on and on.

wont make Maldives warning to India go away.
Did you see a direct warning in that article? I must have missed it. What are these clowns going to do?

Nice little story-----------If only it wasn't a total fantasy.
Which part is a fantasy?
