Man dies while in custody of Malaysian police

Fri May 24, 2013 3:19PM GMT

Relatives grieve over the body of N Dharmendran, a 31-year-old ethnic Indian, who died in police custody.

He was detained on May 11th when he went to the police station to file a report following a fight.

Ten days later while he was still in police custody he died. The police blamed his death on an asthma attack.

But the post mortem showed that the man died as a result of severe beating and that his wounds were fresh.

Police have now reclassified the case as murder.

Malaysia former Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi pushed for the creation of an independent commission to investigate allegations of police wrongdoing. But it never materialised in the face of strong opposition from the police.

According to official statistics, there were 147 deaths in police custody in 2012.

In most of the cases of alleged police brutality, the victims were ethnic Indians although they only make up eight percent of the population.

But Dharmendran’s death has renewed calls for the creation of an independent body to monitor the police, even from supporters of the ruling coalition.

The police said they will set up a task force to try to identify who is responsible for Dharmendran’s death.

But that would bring little comfort to his family.

Ethnicity issues are always the hardest to solve. Malaysia is going through that battle.

Well it seems even the Malaysian state is hostile to the ethnic Indian community there. Not to mention the Malaysian police seem to racially profile Indians in Malaysia for crimes.

Which is a wrong thing to do in a Democracy like Malaysia. Granted that no country is perfect, but Malays can do better than that.

Before the truth come out, make a label "Ethnicity issue" is not right

I'm basing my comment on the OP's opinion as I'm not too familiar with the issue

Thus, my comment was not about this specific incident. The general view is that there is a under-current of ethnic tension in Malaysia. Please prefer to these two threads for more.

Of course, these are just separate incidents that may, or may not directly link to ethnic discrimination. However, polling data show significant mistrusts among ethnic groups, seeding for more profound problems later-on.

And that's why you don't mess with the majority of the population. Let that be a lesson for indians in Malaysia.

This shows how incompetent and ill trained police force they have.

Maybe he got the beating while he was involved in a fight before he got arrested and then he succumbed to his injuries during custody. Allahu Alam.

Malaysia's police force is well trained and competent; this was a deliberate action on their part. This was bound to happen considering all the illegal ethnic Indians in Malaysia and all of the troubles they cause there. Police in Malaysia regularly racially profile Indians there and so these kinds of incidents occur.

Well according to the postmortem "his wounds were fresh" he was in police custody for 10 days or so, so any wounds he suffered in the fight 10 days ago would not be fresh. I think it's more than likely the Malaysian police gave him a good thrashing in custody over the 10 days he was in their custody.

When an innocent man dies in custody from beating, the police force should not be called a civilized force first, far from being well trained and competent. This man was a legal citizen and if he gets killed for the mess illegal immigrants create then its a shame for such a civilized, competent force.Hope it is not that difficult to understand.

Malaysia is one of the most racially and religiously intolerant country in the world
