Malaysian Air Force Team Likely To Visit India Soon To Assess Suitability Of LCA Tejas Fighter Jet

Tejas MK1A is more expensive than Gripen. Indians have mastered the art of farting through their mouth. Malaysia will go for South Korean jets considering their interest in their latest LCA/Trainer jet. No country not even India want nightmare called Tejas. Indian will only make token purchase of Tejas just like they did with Arjunk Tank.

In a major development, a team of Malaysian Air Force is expected to visit India within the coming two months to assess the suitability of the indigenously developed light combat aircraft (LCA) Tejas fighter jet, reports Economic Times.

During the visit, the Malaysian team is likely to be given a full tour of the LCA's production facilities, test infrastructure, and a demonstration of the fighter jet's combat potential.


India is said to be offering the Mk1A version of the LCA with modern AESA radar, new avionics and the capability to integrate a variety of weaponry to the Malaysian Air Force. The potential export order from Malaysia is likely to have an initial size of 12 fighter jets, with the option for 24 more fighter jets in the future.

According to the ET report, the Indian fighter jet has emerged as the top contender for the Malaysian Air Force as it is cheaper than Swedish Gripen, and more modern and capable than Pakistan's Chinese origin JF-17 jet.

Besides the LCA Tejas, Gripen and the JF 17, the South Korean T 50 is also a contender for the contract.

Other than the aircraft, India is also offering the Malaysian Air force full support in training both ground and air personnel. It is also offering to build a full maintenance, repair and overhaul facility for the jets in Malaysia to ensure a higher availability rate.

It should be noted that the Indian Air Force (IAF) has already placed orders for 83 Tejas jets. The aircraft is priced at just over $42 million a unit.

The Malays aren't stupid enough to select the indian tejas, for their next generation fighter. If they want affordability with technologically superior single engine combat aircraft, then JAS-39 Gripe-NG is the choice to go for. However, if the Malays want the combat aircraft with on-par technologically advanced single engine, and without the "Western Sanctions" liability dragging it down, then the JF-17 Thunder Block-3 is the choice.

The indian tejas is nowhere near of Thunders, which is combat proven.

There were talks of integration Brahmos AL on Malaysian Su30MKM and it's upgradation to Super-30. Also Indian government can offer to unban Malaysian Palm oil imports. India was the largest impoter of Malaysian Palm oil and imported $1.5 B worth of oil in 2019 before it was banned in 2020.

You also purchased over 100 Arjunks but we all know how they are sitting gathering dust. Same will be the fate of Tejas which will only be reserved for National Parades and Airshows. Btw India put order for 100 Tejas 10 years ago with only 15 inducted to date but never put on front lines.

I do not envy Malaysia's position on this purchase. Caught in between.

They're not caught in between anything. They have a product decision to make from the RMAF's perspective, based on whichever is superior or meets their needs better.

On the other hand, their politicians have a bigger headache in finding the money and then doing a balancing act if at all required. They will most likely select 2 options and then based on the best financial offers they will decide on which one to go with.

They also have the Korean FA-50 as a safe but less capable option if they want to go that way. Although it's not as capable, is only available as a two seater (which means less fuel onboard) and doesn't have enough of a development roadmap to warrant a purchase from the Malays, in my opinion. For e.g. no BVRAAM nor AESA planned as of now and certainly not offered either.

However, if the Malays want to use this LCA fighter as a LIFT as well, then the FA-50 or TA-50 can fit that need better than the JF-17 or Tejas since all TA-50s can act as LIFTs, whereas with both JF-17 and Tejas they'll need to buy separate twin seater trainers.

Yes they should take all precautions since Covid-19 is a genuine worry in India right now.

But my guess is that they'll simply postpone the visit.
