Turkey’s armored vehicle giant FNSS Defence Systems, Inc. has signed a $600-million contract with the government of Malaysia to provide the Malaysian military with 257 PARS infantry fighting vehicles (IFV).
“PARS was named after an indigenous Turkish wild cat and it is a new generation IFV that features superior mobility, ballistic protection and payload capapacity,” said Mr. Nail Kurt, chairman of FNSS. Malaysia will receive the largest 8×8 version of the vehicle. Other drive options offered by the company are 4×4 and 6×6.
FNSS had signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with the Malaysian government at an international Asian defence exhibition that took place in the Malaysian capital city of Kuala Lumpur. LOI specified special customizations opted for by the Malaysian armed forces and included FNSS’ guaranty to design new features and meet or exceed the Malaysian specifications.
FNSS’ contract with the Malaysian government is a new high score and nearly doubles the company’s previous export record of $324 million, which was signed with Saudi Arabia in 2010. Previously, FNSS had also sold Malaysia armored combat vehicles worth $211 million.
Aseembly to be performed in Malaysia
According to the agreement, major and critical components of the vehicles will be manufactured in FNSS’ own facilities in Turkey, including the customizations specially designed for Malaysia. Integration of customer-specific engine options, track, subsystems and sensors suite will be performed by FNSS. Parts will then be shipped to Malaysia for final assembly and testing under FNSS supervision. FNSS will provide their Malaysian counterparts with the required know-how and technology for quality assurance purposes.
12 different variations of the vehicles will be produced for a wide spectrum of missions.
“The volume of this contract is very important for Turkey. We’ve exported AFV technology before but it was based on US-technology. This time FNSS is exporting a more advanced and completely indigenous platform to a foreign country, before selling to vehicle to Turkey’s own military. This is a sign of how quickly FNSS is advancing in the armored vehicles industry and the trust our company has established in Malaysia over the years,” added Mr. Kurt.
FNSS has been present in the Malaysian defence market since 1993, when the company worked for the first time with Malaysia’s Deftech as a subcontractor for domestic procurement projects. FNSS was established in 1988 and is currently one of Turkey’s Top 10 defence firms in terms of total revenues with hundreds of employees in Turkey and overseas. Turkey’s Nurol Holding, Inc. maintains a 51% controlling interest in the company.
