Malaysia breaks with Asean over Rohingya crisis

Myanmar government has urged the Rohingya Hindus to return to Myanmar but not to Rohingya Muslims. And you are still saying it's not a religious conflict?

No i dont, Because there are hundreds of thousands of Burmese Muslims living there without much of a big issue, There estimated 200 mosques in that country apparently.. @Aung Zaya correct me if i'm wrong.. If this was a Buddhist religious war against Muslims the first attacked would be Muslims living among rest of the Burmese community

4 percent or more Myanmar population is Muslim, the largest is Bamar population actually most living near Rangoon and Mandalay

Bangladesh as i mentioned is caught between a rock and a hard place, Though it fundamentally disastrous for you to admit in term of regional interests that the Rohingya basically being Bengali migrants

Btw what ever the reasons Bangladesh is in the right side of this conflict as regards to the humanitarian aspect.. Kudos

What evidence do you have that the Rohingya are migrants?

@madokafc

So when will Indonesia do the same?
As part of the Tionghoa (Chinese-Indonesian) community I am disgusted by the lukewarm response of the Indonesian government towards genocide & hope the country would take a tougher stance towards Burma. But who am I kidding this government took the side of the Serbs during the civil war.

Tks for that.. Yes it's purely the propaganda of interested parties to make this conflict out to be a religious one when it's clearly a ethno/nationalist one.. Just to get mass sympathy from the Muslim nations, Exploiting the current "Islamophobia" narrative and exploiting highly emotional nature of Muslims in general

What evidence to you have to say they're not ? Conflicts like this usually run a concurrent information war, It's one's choice to make note of all sides and make a informed opinion.. Bangladeshi's are ethnically and religiously selective in this case for obvious reasons, People who are affiliated neither to the warring sides not so much, Hence they can have more neutral viewpoint

From gov. standpoint Indonesia is always perserve status quo above else. The Serbs is preserving the unity of Yugoslav rep. Indonesia gov. hence symphatized with them, unless they doing something outrageous.

Malaysia said on Sunday that it had distanced itself from the Asean chairman’s recent statement on the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar, which was issued at the UN General Assembly in New York on Saturday.

In a surprise statement, Malaysia, one of Asean’s 10 member states, said it considered that the chairman’s comments misrepresented what had really happened in Myanmar’s Rakhine state.

“In this regard, Malaysia has made known its concerns, but they were not reflected in the chairman’s statement,” said Minister of Foreign Affairs Anifah Aman.

“Hence, the chairman’s statement was not based on consensus. The statement also omits the Rohingya as one of the affected communities.”

The Philippines is this year’s chairman of the 10 member Asean group whose chairmanship rotates annually.

In the statement issued on September 24, Anifah said Kuala Lumpur condemned the attacks against Myanmar security forces launched by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army on August 25.

However, the subsequent “clearance operations” by Myanmar authorities were disproportionate, the Malaysian statement continued, in that it had led to the deaths of many innocent civilians and displaced more than 400,000 Rohingya.

“We express grave concerns over such atrocities which have unleashed a full-scale humanitarian crisis that the world simply cannot ignore but must be compelled to act upon,” the minister continued.

Malaysia then strongly urged the Myanmar government to end the violence, stop the destruction to lives and property, allow immediate unimpeded access for the delivery of humanitarian aid to Rohingya and all affected communities, and resolve the Rohingya refugee problem.

He also urged that viable, long-term solutions to the root causes of the conflict be found in order for Rohingya and affected communities to be able to rebuild their lives.

“We also urge Myanmar to fulfil its commitment to immediately implement the recommendations of the final report of the [UN] Advisory Commission of the Rakhine state,” he said.

Malaysia dispatched humanitarian aid to Bangladesh on September 9 and has pledged to continue to offer support.

Asean is comprised of Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam and Thailand.

What about Indonesia?

You are clearly misinformed about the country. The Burmese Buddhist monks constantly incite anti-Muslim hatred among the masses through propaganda movements like 969 and are thoroughly supported by the military. And because of this, from time to time, anti-Muslim riots occur in different parts of Burma.

Obviously, the country was not like this always. This all started since the accession of Ne Win as the Military Dictator in 1960s. He was a recognized Islamophobe who expelled the Muslims from military service as well as stripping them of many other rights.

It is true that the ruling Bamars have issues with all other ethnicities in Burma, but in the case of Rohingya there's a significant anti-Muslim sentiments in work.

So widespread rape and murder is not outrageous?

I think Indonesia supported them as like former Yugoslavia, you are a legal construct rather than a nation like BD or Japan.
