Nice weird looking helo but a question in my mind these type of helos India produces at home then why they are purchasing from Russia.

Which such modern helicopter does India produce, please name it.

There is LUH under development, and for that an order of about 200 is already placed. We found it prudent not to place an order of 400 for an under development platform and reduce risk through divercification, hence half the order was placed for the Kamov.

It's all about timing. Look at the recent CAG report- they have lambasted the GoI/MoD/IA for operating 40+ year old Cheetah and Cheetaks, these foriegn RSH (Recon Survelience helicopters) are meant to replace such ancient helos in the IAF and IA, one cannot wait for HAL's LUH which will only enter service in 2019 (at best).

The total requirement for LUH/RSH between the IA and IAF is around 400 units and the MoD has decided to split this- 187 for HAL's LUH and 197 for a foriegn RSH. The foreign RSH should have been in service by now but the previous Defence Minister truly f*cked the military leading to a 2-3 year delay.

According to the Ka-226 buy, a proven product can start replacing the vintage helos by 2017 whilst the HAL LUH is still under flight testing.
