Major uranium reserves found in Srisailam forests

That's a cyclone prone area.almost every year there is a class 5 typhoon hits near by area. I reside in an area not very far from the proposed area in odisha. Not sure very Good idea to have nuclear facilities there.
Sir, the reactor is specifically designed to take Tornado wind speeds of upto 330 mph and twisting tornado speeds of 260 mph. I assume this is far in excess of cyclones we get in bay of Bengal and hence it quite safe.

HYDERABAD: India's plan for a 'strategic uranium reserve' received a shot in the arm with a joint research team of the city-headquartered Atomic Minerals Directorate (AMD) and Osmania University discovering significant quantity of uranium reserves in the Srisailam forests.

The AMD-OU team carried out research in an area spread over 45 sq km around Srisailam sub-basin of Kadapa super basin in Andhra Pradesh. A part of the Kadapa super basin extends over to Telangana state. The team zeroed in on Chennakesavula Gutta and Padra villages using the latest equipment to detect the precious radioactive element. The quality of the uranium mineralization discovered in these two areas is superior and comparable to the one available in Canada and Australia, team members informed.

Earlier, the AMD had discovered uranium reserves in pockets of Mahbubnagar, Karimnagar and Nalgonda districts in Telangana and Guntur and Kadapa districts in Andhra Pradesh. Chennakesavula Gutta and Padra are the latest addition to the vast uranium resources in the two Telugu states. Officials have estimated that AP has about five lakh tonnes of uranium reserves, mostly in the Kadapa super basin while Telangana has about a lakh tonnes of the nuclear resource. The latest discovery has added to the country's nuclear fuel security. AP and Telangana together account for 25 per cent of India's uranium reserves.

The research team comprising S Niranjan Kumar of AMD and Vishnu Bhoopathi, RSN Sastry and B Srinivas of the department of applied geochemistry, Osmania University, published the discovery in the recent issue of the Chinese Journal of Geochemistry. "This discovery represents a significant breakthrough and may contribute substantially to the uranium resource of India. More significantly, the geological understanding of this unique mineralization may give definite clues in locating the classical unconformity-type deposits in the northern parts of the Kadapa basin," the geochemists pointed out.

Analysis of the samples collected from Chennakesavula Gutta and Padra villages showed up to 202 parts per million of uranium. Also the uranium deposit in Amrabad mandal of Mahbubnagar district has been found to be unique. "Efforts in the identical geological set-up of Srisailam sub-basin will result in establishing many such deposits of similar quality," they said.

The Uranium Corporation of India has already set up a uranium mining mill at Tummalapalle village in Kadapa district. It has proposed a similar project Lambapur-Peddagattu region in Nalgonda district. A mega nuclear power project has been planned in Srikakulam district and the new discovery in Srisailam is likely to make India self-sufficient in nuclear fuel.

:D:D:D
I have heard that Many precious uranium reserves are in Balochistan too.

Minerals should be wisely used. If not, nothing will be gained.

My state Jharkhand produces 33% of minerals produced by India yearly. But despite of producing largest amount of good quality coal in India, my city Ranchi, capital of Jharkhand has big power cuts.

We have a power plant in Patratu with 840 MW capacity but it has been running at a mere 10% FLP. Reason? Because coal mined here is first sent to power stations near Delhi and Mumbai.

Hope our people stand up in arms and not let a single for piece of coal supplied outside Jharkhand untill our needs are fullfilled.

PS :- And yes I don't mean naxalites as our people here.

We mine here everything for India. From Iron ore to Bauxite, from Coal to Mica. But we still are no better than people living in sub Saharan regions.

Also the mines near Jadugoda in my state are stated by the Government of India to have largest deposit in India and the mine is nearly 1 km deep. New small mined are being discovered every now and then near the big one. But despite Jharkhand being in one of the most safest zone with respect to Earth Quakes and seismic activity, we haven't got even a proposal of setting up a nuclear power plant here. I don't want to say this but often Government of India is biased towards bigger cites and big states. :undecided:
You should be thankful to Govt. for new auction based policy regarding mining rights where States will get 100% of royalty unlike previous policy of discretionary free allotments which was a norm.
I guess Jharkhand will become the richest Indian State in near future if they can bring naxalites into main stream.

I can tell you one thing for sure. Locals don't want them back. It would be better if Government gives Army a go ahead.

My father is a Primary Teacher who is often reputed in Red zones. Every Independence day and Republic day those Rebels come in villages and host black flags. Its not the police who removes them but teenagers who salute our high flag. The present situation is perfect for Army to come in. If it doesn't happen, you will see within an year , true and real Tribals picking up weapons killing these reds themselves. This is the sentiment among locals.

Naxalite movement may have been started at a time when Socialism was an in-thing but I really can not figure out the real reasons behind this movement in modern time.
My gut feeling is that these Naxals must be having solid patronage of corrupt & anti-India politicians and must have the backing of foreign funds by shady NGO's

@P.K.

Yes you got it right. There is a huge mafia combining that of coal , sand, bauxite, wood cutters, arms summglers and groups like SIMI. They all have contacts with some big industrialist too.

Ever wondered what's stopping TATA and Mittal to start building their proposed steel plants here?
There are plans for 17,500 MWs of coal fired energy but till now nothing on ground. This is not possible without political and economical support.

Small villages around Ranchi are becoming breeding grounds for SIMI and IM operatives.

Mark my words, next terrorist activity if happens in India will be traced to my town.

No wonder why our reputed Media is called presstitude.

These strife are one of the biggest National Problems but it will hardly be highlighted let alone being debated in any Prime Time slot :pissed:

Superior quality, likely to make India SELF-SUFFCIENT.:woot:
If true, it could be India's one of biggest news of the century. :yahoo::yahoo::yahoo:

They did not say how big is this find?
Time to have many more nuclear power plants...

Few nuclear bomb also

.
Why don't you destroy your house and plant tree instead and destroy roads and cities as these once where forest where you live in a multi stor building

Now we can start selling uranium at least ?
Already got a few oxygen makers!!! Don't need to plant more trees because it's woopwoopstan.
