KURRAM AGENCY: Security forces with the assistance of political officials thwarted a major terror bid in Kurram Agency.

According to security forces officials, huge cache of modern weapons was recovered during an action launched with the assistance of political officials, adding that presence of such a massive quantity of arms points towards a major terror plan, which was foiled.

. . . .
I thought Khurram Agency had been declared safe.
This is where I fault ISPR and our political leadership to some degree - 'declaring an area safe' only refers to the situation at one point in time. Continued security in the sanitized area is dependent upon improved civilian governance and especially improvements in local law enforcement, and even then will not result in 100% reduction in terrorism. Add in the fact that TTP, AQ, LeJ, Baloch terrorist sanctuaries continue to exist in Afghanistan with NDS support and that we have a massive porous border with Afghanistan, and continued terrorist attacks or attempts are guaranteed.

These facts don't get get mentioned nearly as often and clearly as they should, which in turn leaves the military open to criticism later when incidents do occur.

I wonder what role "political officials" had in this gun bust.

Political Officials are the people who have serious ties with different tribes in that region. In many cases, these guys may get Human Intel such as some "suspicious new faces staying at person X's house in a city", or suspicious transportation activity by some transporter or at someone's house. Call them contractor-informants if you will.

Its because FATA is still governed the way British used to govern it, which is wrong. A political agent is sent from the center to govern each tribal agency, so the political officials are probably the staff and govt servants who work with the "Political Agent"..eg: Assistant Political Agent, etc. These are usually local people, who apply for govt jobs, through civil service examinations.
