Major repairs for the INS Viraat, its replacement delayed again by Russia

...
Looks like some journos have strated treating news as fashion industry which picks up old fashion and sells it as new....not worthy of saying a bit more than this.

You have made a good point.

Actually, this is a dangerous trend.-

These 24*7 news media groups are having a cut-throat competition, in the process of one upman-ship they have completely forgotten that the NATIONAL SECURITY is of paramount interest.

Cases being - Showing live feed of 26/11, making a scam out of the VVIP chopper deal even before a FIR is filed, etc.

These media trials & spread of false news should be controlled immediately by the GOI.

INS Viraat, the Navy's only aircraft carrier, is currently getting a major overhaul at the shipyard in Kochi which will allow it to serve till 2016.

The British-made carrier has been in service for the past 53 years - it was first with the UK Navy, and then with the Indian navy for 28 years.

The effective life of any ship with the best of refits and repairs is about 40 years. The INS Viraat has beaten that average handsomely.

After its hull is repaired in Kochi, it will sail to Mumbai for other repairs and is unlikely to join the Navy before July.

"This is the last major refit that INS Viraat is likely to see" a senior navy official told NDTV.

Its replacement, the INS Vikramaditya, which is being bought for 12,500 crores from Russia, will reach India in 2014, and not November, as last promised by Russia. The induction of the 45,000-tonne aircraft carrier that can carry about 30 aircraft has already been delayed by a year, provoking a sharp reprimand recently for Moscow by Defence Minister AK Antony.

Another two aircraft carriers, which are the largest warships to be made by India, are also running behind schedule. They are being built at the Kochi shipyard and are unlikely to be available to the Navy before 2018.

They are likely to be named the INS Vikrant, the warship bought from the UK, which joined the Indian Navy in 1957 and was decommissioned after 40 years.

With the US likely to shift its focus from the Gulf to Asia Pacific, India is expected to exert a stabilising effect in the area. Besides, with the increased militarization of the Indian Ocean region - because of the increased American and Chinese presence - India needs to have more assets in place to be protect its trade and boundaries.

:hitwall::hitwall::hitwall::hitwall::hitwall:

This has become a joke. Last time Antony said there will be penalty clauses in case of further delays. Will he act on his word?

Nothing Anthony can do here. Every purchase that is being done by India from Russia - Sonia family gets a certain cut. KGB has excellent relation with this family.

This ship was not meant to arrive in India this year, it will be handed over to us later this year but will only reach Indian waters somewhere in the beginning of 2014!!!

Besides, there is not Indian or Russian statement on this.

The 26/11 broadcast was pathetic.

But I dont know if these guys take any oath before taking up their roles as journos, considered as the fourth pillar of democracy. If other 3 pillars can then why not these???...But again when the other 3 pillars are as irresponsible like the fourth, what else do you expect.

Do we have a news broadcast control agancy?

Ever heard of freedom of press??? you arguments are the usual arguments of any authoritarian regime/dictator etc

Read my statement again mate, i said - MEDIA TRIALS (like in case of VVIP choppers) & SPREAD OF FALSE NEWS (like this case), should be CONTROLLED by GOI.

Where did i say that we should curb FREEDOM OF PRESS???

Or is it that Freedom of Press means the right to have there own TRIALS (i thought we have Judiciary for that) & SPREAD FALSE news??

Remember 26/11?? In all probability, our 2 commandos died BECAUSE of the news channels showing LIVE FEED.

Is this Freedom of Press you were talking about??

Dear Koovie,

My freedom stops where the others freedom starts. There is a limit to freedom too.
Now if my freedom disrupts and discourages other to not apply his freedom then thats called dictatorship, and thats what this press is doing.

We are not against press, but its freehand of intervantion in all matters including NATIONAL SECURITY.

BURBAK ...We are talking about aircraft carrier INS Viraat...not destroyer.
i know and to fill the gap in the mean time you can buy aegis because it works the same it has cruise missile and anti fighter jet capability and can Attack targets anywhere Land AIR SEA even take out Sats

yea but they not like the aegis aegis can take on an aircraft carrier any given day it has too much destruction power in a conftration you wouldhaveto load the missile onthe aircraft fly it from the carrier and then drop it onaegis on aegis track lock and fire and see the destruction
specially stealth aegis if india gets that china will be scared and might not help pakistan as much as it does now militarily because

this year we will get our first AESA destroyer and total 3 in next 2 yeras followed by 4 more in coming years....
