Major oil find near Pak-Iran border

What gurantees that it is not same story like Thar coal, or Reko Dik or that fortune discovery or Iron ore near Chiniot? Nothing came from them!
I will not celebrate until the first oil barrels start coming out OR at least until the news in confirmed and infrastructure setup starts!

If the well was that big people would had seen in bare eyes. Just joking.
A well of that size would not had remained hidden so long. I am sure PK had a lot of surveys before.

While chiniot is not feasible, Thar coal is dug and the power plant will start generation next year, reko diq too is a proven reserve. Don't confuse the sheer incompetence, indifference and plundering mentality with the validity of these reserves.

Its pretty much the same story with our water resources, Bhasha and Munda which should have started construction 10 years ago and should have been operational by now are still a dream.

LAHORE – The financially-strapped Pakistanis were left pleasantly surprised after being informed by leading media outlets that largest oil reserves have been unearthed in the country, however, the ground realities confirm that the piece of news might appear to be fake.

Pakistani media is currently flooded with speculative and fake news owing to the fraught election season and possible appointments in days to come, however, one of the news story carried by multiple media outlets quoted minister for Maritime Affairs and Foreign Affairs Abdullah Hussain Haroon, as saying that ExxonMobil (multinational oil and gas company) has indicated that it was close to hitting huge oil reserves near the Pak-Iran border, which could be even bigger than the Kuwaiti reserves.

Though Haroon made the comments on Friday while addressing business leaders at the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) adding that the government had already taken an undertaking from the company to set up a generation complex worth $10 billion.

However, the statement seems contrary to the facts and virtually another piece of FAKE news, an indication of which is multiple factors.

  • Firstly, ExxonMobil is not operating in Balochistan province and is not involved in any exploration. It is only working on an offshore field with ENI, PPL, and OGDC with a 25 percent interest.
  • Secondly, Pakistan Petroleum Information Service, which keeps a record of explorations in the country, has not mentioned the ‘so-called’ discovery of huge oil reserves on its website.
The oil discovery is reminiscent of the major reserves of gold, silver, copper and iron ore which were claimed to have been discovered from Punjab’s Chiniot district in 2015.

At that time, then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, chief minister Punjab Shehbaz Sharif and notable scientists felicitated the nation, with a hope that the minerals would boost the economy of the country, however, what happened to the discovery, is still unknown to many.

“The discovery of gold is a blessing of Allah Almighty,” chief minister Punjab had said at that time.

Moreover, Dr Samar Mubarkiman, a scientist who was assigned the task of processing the Chiniot project also confirmed the presence of gold and silver deposits, however, nothing substantial followed, three days after the exploration.

The discovery of huge Oil reserves and its exploration by ExxonMobil seems to be factually wrong despite the fact that the all-aware minister has confirmed the development.

Interestingly, ExxonMobil acquired a 25 percent stake in offshore drilling in Pakistan in May this year for which a ceremony was organized in the PM House between Government Holdings Private Limited (GHPL), PPL, ENI, OGDC and Exxon Mobil.

Previously, Italian energy giant Eni, Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) and Oil and Gas Development Company (OGDC) held 33 percent share each in offshore drilling in Pakistan but the agreement restricted the share of the remaining three companies to 25 percent each.

ExxonMobil has major experience in the realm of offshore drilling, however, it has neither listed Pakistan on its website nor shared the news about the discovery of ‘huge oil reserves’ near the Pak-Iran border.

The impetus for disseminating such information, which is apparently contrary to the facts, might be to create a positive impression in the Oild and Gas market, however, when the reality comes to the fore, the investors are left high and dry.

*Representatives of PPIS and ExxonMobil have yet to respond to the queries

OGDCL Finds Oil, Gas In Pakistan
Oil and Gas Development Company (OGDCL)-led Mela D&PL block joint venture has discovered oil and natural gas in Pakistan, OGDCL said on Tuesday.

The joint venture has found oil and gas from the development well Mela 05, located in Kohat district of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa province. This is the first discovery of oil and gas from Samanasuk Formation in Mela oil field, the company said. The well has tested 95 b/d of oil and 0.249mn ft3/d of gas.

The Mela joint venture comprises OGDCL as operator (56.45%), Pakistan Petroleum (28.55%) and Government Holdings (15%).

Allah ke bando, thero. Fake news.

This thread is mostly about the authenticity of the statements made by Abdullah Hussain Haroon.

Your typically cringeworthy and frustrated comments along with Islamic references are getting on my nerves Sunil. Remove that idiotic video at the end please. It's not remotely relevant.

this clarify few things like
1- The block which was mention in the news is 2265-1 in which Exon, ENI, OGDCL and PPL are having 25% shares each
2- Its an off-shore block lies at Pakistan's EEZ at south of Thata-Badin coast (oil and gas belt of Sindh)
3- Balochistan (and Iran) was wrongly mention
4- Preliminary study of the block seems encouraging as exon has made a comeback in Pakistan after more than 2 decades and has already committed to invest $10 billion for refinery. Size of the discovery may vary than initial claim but must be suitable enough to attract one of the world leading oil company back to Pakistan.

yes, these r the oil reserves that an AIDE of Ayub Khan was talking abt in his book. The reason why iran helped us in 1965 war was because that we reached a treaty with Shah that Pakistan will not extract oil from Balochistan in next 100 years, so that the oil in Sistan dont go dry as the underground crust of the earth in this area is sloped towards Pakistan, and oil being a liquid will always have tendency to move from lower concentration to higher concentration. Hence the oil under balochistan is much much larger then sistan, but if Pakistan started drilling it then Sistan will turn dry much faster.

Yes, I remember even in the early 70's a pretty common knowledge Pakistanis had--even a child like me--that Pakistan has lots of oil near Iran border but Pakistan is not going to extract it for some reasons. That myth, along with Bholu Pehlwan the biggest wrestler in the world, Seth Abid the 'Arab Patti' buying Pakistan nukes, and that 'there must be a God otherwise Pakistan wouldn't even exist in the world'...

You get my drift.

The way corruption works in Pakistan ,pretty sure nothing will come out of this project, but that doesn't mean nothing exists.
I wanted to import a vehicle from Japan and an officer showed me a unique way via Afghanistan. You can pretty much do anything in Pakistan, the level of corruption is amazing, nowhere to be found elsewhere.
All of Pakistani institutions are trying hard to wipe this state from world's map.

I Still Think A Detailed Survey of Balochistan Both Onshore and Offshore Should Be Done.

So Should Indus Delta Be Explored As It Has The Same Stratigraphy As Most Oil Producing Delta Basins In The World

VERY mature post. Thanks.
Regarding Chiniot however, how is it not feasible? For what i learnt about it, the ore was even not that deep either. It was claimed to be one easy job.

Reko Dik is real as well as Thar coal
Reko Dik supreme court intervene and stop the project of mining...
Thar Coal our scientist and engineer fail to produce electricity from boring and direct burning from inside.

These myths are not at all wrong...
Seth Abid did smuggle critical components to build nuclear plant and centrifuges.
Yes Pakistan can't or not willing to drill near Iran border since Iran is drilling "Slant types) to extract oil..it is the same issue like Kuwait drilled slants near Iraq border.
Mean you are drilling from your area but extracting oil near or inside from another territory.

Yes we can debate on Bholo Pehalwan.....
