Gaddafi Stadium (Urdu: قذافی اسٹیڈیم‎ / ALA-LC: Qaẕẕāfī Isṭeḍiyam), or Qaddafi Stadium, previously known as Lahore Stadium is a cricket playing ground in Lahore, Pakistan which is named after former Libyan head of state Muammar Gaddafi. It is owned by the Pakistan Cricket Board.[1] It was designed by architect and civil engineer Nasreddin Murat-Khan, and constructed by Mian Abdul Khaliq and Company in 1959. The stadium was renovated for the 1996 Cricket World Cup when it hosted the final.[2]

The headquarters of the Pakistan Cricket Board are situated at Gaddafi Stadium making it the home of the Pakistan national cricket team. The stadium has a capacity of 27,000 seats, making it one of the biggest in Pakistan.[3][4]
Ground history[edit]
Originally Lahore Stadium, the ground was renamed in 1974 in honour of the former Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi following a speech he gave at the 2nd Organisation of the Islamic Conference meeting in Lahore in favour of Pakistan's right to pursue nuclear weapons.[5] The stadium houses the headquarters of the Pakistan Cricket Board.[6]

In 1995–96, the Gaddafi Stadium was renovated by architect Nayyar Ali Dada - who is qualified from National College of Arts Lahore - for the 1996 Cricket World Cup.[6] Dada's redesign was done in the Mughal style, with red, hand-laid brickwork and arches. Dada also had plastic seating installed in place of the existing concrete benches. The lower portion under the stands was enclosed and converted to shops for boutiques and offices. Gaddafi Stadium was the first in Pakistan to be equipped with modern floodlights having their own standby power generators.[7]

On 23 October 2011, Pakistan Cricket Board discussed renaming the stadium following the death of Gaddafi, to support the new government in Libya. The Punjab Olympic Association made a similar request in late October 2011 to the provincial chief minister, "I don't think his profile is inspirational enough to link with our cricket stadium's identity." As of April 2012, however, it does not appear that the stadium's name will be changed after all.[8]

Gaddafi Stadium being the largest cricket stadium in Pakistan used to have capacity of 60,000 spectators, until the redesigning of its enclosures reduced the capacity to 27,000.[9]

Cricket history[edit]
In 1968, a Test match, played against England, was affected due to riots.[10]

In 1977, another Test, also against England, was affected due to riots between police and spectators.[11]

Three hat-tricks have been taken at the stadium, by Peter Petherick of New Zealand against Pakistan, 9 October 1976, Wasim Akram of Pakistan against Sri Lanka, 6 March 1999 and Mohammad Sami of Pakistan against Sri Lanka.[12]

Pakistan has enjoyed some memorable moments on the ground, including a fifth-wicket stand of 281 between Javed Miandad and Asif Iqbal against New Zealand in 1976 and an innings and 324 run win against New Zealand in 2002.[13]

On 3 March 2009, the scheduled third day of second Test of 2008–09 Sri Lanka tour of Pakistan, the Sri Lankan team's convoy was attacked by armed militants at Liberty Roundabout, near Gaddafi stadium. Eight Sri Lankan players were injured, including Sri Lankan captain, Mahela Jayawardene. The Sri Lankan team was air-lifted from Gaddafi Stadium to a nearby airbase, from where they were evacuated back to Sri Lanka, this event marked the end of international cricket in Pakistan.[6]

However, on 19 May 2015, the Zimbabwe cricket team landed at the Allama Iqbal International Airport to become the first Full Member nation to tour Pakistan since March 2009.[14] On 5 March 2017 the final of the 2017 Pakistan Super League was played in the stadium.[6][15] Pakistan won both ODI and T20I series comfortably.

On August 2017, PCB along with ICC started to improve international cricket in Pakistan. With that, under heavy security, PCB planned World XI tour to Pakistan for three T20Is.[16][17]

In August 2017, Thilanga Sumathipala, president of Sri Lanka Cricket, said that he would like to play at least one of the three T20I matches in Lahore, Pakistan during October.[18][19][20] In March 2009, the Sri Lanka cricket team were attacked by terrorists while travelling to the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Since then, the only Test side to visit Pakistan has been Zimbabwe, when they toured during May 2015.[18] Two of Sri Lanka's current team, Chamara Kapugedera and Suranga Lakmal were on the bus during the 2009 terrorist attack, and both could have been selected for the T20I squad for this series.[21]

In September 2017, the fixtures were confirmed, with the final T20I match of the series scheduled to be played in Lahore.[22] Sri Lanka Cricket said that players have a "contractual obligation" to play the match in Lahore, but it was unlikely to issue penalties to any player who chose not to visit Pakistan.[21] However, on 14 October 2017, the Sri Lankan team expressed their reluctance to travel to Pakistan, requesting that the fixture is moved to a neutral venue.[23] On 16 October 2017, Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed that the fixture in Lahore would go ahead as planned, but their limited-overs captain, Upul Tharanga, had pulled out of the match.[24] Despite the concerns from the players, team manager Asanka Gurusinha felt that a competitive squad would be named.[25] On 19 October 2017, Sri Lanka's chief selector, Graham Labrooy, said that players who do not travel to Lahore would be unlikely to be selected for the other two T20I fixtures.[26] The squad for the T20I fixtures was named two days later, with Thisara Perera selected as captain.[27]

The Sri Lankan squad arrived in Lahore under "extraordinary" security and made their way to the team's hotel in a bomb-proof bus.[28] Ahead of the T20I in Lahore, Cricket Sri Lanka's president Thilanga Sumathipala said that the team was privileged to be in Pakistan and that he would help support the country in hosting more tours.[29] Najam Sethi, chairman of the PCB, said that this fixture would be the start of international cricket returning to the country, with him expecting every country to play in Pakistan by the end of 2020.[30] Pakistan went on to win the T20I series 3–0.[31]

A T20I match scheduled to be played against Bangladesh on 27 January 2020 at the Gaddafi stadium was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to heavy rain.[32]

The venue is also hosted some of the main matches as a part of the 2018 Blind Cricket World Cup.[33][34] In September 2019, the Pakistan Cricket Board named it as one of the venues to host matches in the 2019–20 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.[35]

Of course it is your sovereign right. I never said otherwise. I was only inquiring.:-)

The muslims of khilaf at movement later became the creators of Pakistan.

Wrong!

Abul Kalam Azad who was one of the major muslim leaders of the Khilafat movement in British India chose India over Pakistan.

Wrong!

Abul Kalam Azad who was one of the major muslim leaders of the Khilafat movement in British India chose India over Pakistan.
Well this is the delima of Indian Muslims.
They now have to claim that they choose India over Pakistan. That is a lie. It is actually they and their forefathers that were big on pakistan. Most of the pakistani elite were from Muslim dominated areas in India. Then there nawabs that wanted their kingdoms merged with pakistan. The Muslim league won in India dominated areas, M. A. JINNAH won from Mumbai. They demanded a seperate nation. We have got it. Sadly they have not. The u.pite and delhite who wanted pakistan either migrate or fell in limbo.
The nawabs of junagarh, bhopal, hyderabad countless other also were forced to choose India while they all choose Pakistan, supported Pakistan. Saif Ali khan's grandfather killed many Hindus who suggested that they are not part of pakistan.
But after the partition happened. The muslims that are big on it didn't get a country. Some migrated.
Other become jealous Muslims who hate Pakistan just because they can. And their claims of choosing India over Pakistan are all false. Even I would go as far as to say that hate is but another expression of love.
They love so much the way we live, free of hindu oppression or not have to justify Islamic history or stay oppressed. they start to hate us which I take as an expression of jealousy.
And there are weriods in every community.
Azad was proven wrong throughout history.
Even today gujrat, Delhi, up pogroms show us. Even blaming carona show us how wrong was azad.
The indians Muslims would try to prove their loyalty all their life, but they are not treated as they should. We heard a term nowadays that modi has shunned the politics of minortism. What exactly does that mean? That means that you should not care for minority? Or what. If someone was appeasing minority that he must be a great person believes in inclusiveness.
So next time any Indian Muslims tells you that his ancestors choose India over Pakistan. Remind him that he is lying.
He fathers choose Pakistan. But they didn't get it in their land and then changed their stand.

I can proudly say the people from my family and clan sacrificed their lives. They were proud muslims. When they came to know that they are being sent to fight against Turkish army .They revolted. It is known in history as SEPOY MUTINY Of SINGAPORE.

Singapore Mutiny of 1915 : Where a lot of Indian Muslim Soldiers were Executed. #WW1
1915 Singapore Mutiny
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 1915 Singapore Mutiny, also known as the 1915 Sepoy Mutiny or the Mutiny of the 5th Light Infantry, was a mutiny involving up to half of a regiment of 850 sepoys (Indian soldiers) against the British in Singapore during the First World War, linked with the 1915 Ghadar Conspiracy. It resulted in the deaths of eight British officers and soldiers, two Malay officers and one soldier, 14 British civilians, five Chinese and Malay civilians and one German internee before it was finally quelled by British forces and Allied naval detachments.

Yaar hadh hogeeyeh. I didn't even claim as such. Nor did anyone else. The claim was that khilafat movement supporters went on to create Pakistan. Jinnah specifically was not discussed. Certainly, it is also true that some Muslims who joined Hindustan also supported the khilafat movement. What's the problem here?

Now rest the communal BJP brain cell for a while - it's been burned out over the last hour.

Aren't you down playing the importance of Jinnah in the creation of Pakistan to support your argument?

Shaukat Ali:
In 1936, Ali became a member of the All India Muslim League and became a close political ally of and campaigner for Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the future founder of Pakistan. He served as member of the 'Central Assembly' in British India from 1934 to 1938. He travelled all over the Middle East, building support for India's Muslims and the struggle for independence from the British rule in India.[1]

Please note that Shaukat Ali died in 1938 much before Pakistan was formed.

All Indian Muslim League was founded in 1906. Why did it take 30 years for Shaukat Ali to join the organization in 1936?

Also, by the time he joined All Indian Muslim League, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk had already abolished the khilafat over a decade ago in 1924.

So it is very apparent that his joining All Indian Muslim League a decade later has no significance.

Let's be clear. Let's be very very clear. The Muslims in general who went on to form and populate Pakistan, as well as many who went on and populated India did support both the khilafat movement generally and the Ottoman struggle post-WW1 (when the Greeks were trying to take Istanbul), as well as Ataturk's republic thereafter. The support has been contiguous up until the present day.

Did Gandhi melt his gold down and send money to the Turks to help their fledgling nation? My backside did he.

But the Muslims of the Muslim league most certainly did.

That Jinnah himself and other secular leaders did not overtly agitate on behalf of the khilafat is irrelevant. When was Jinnah ever in a position to actually send support to said movement by way of state funds or aid?? Never!

Private citizens of British India did though, and they were the ones who fall into the categories I described above.

At no point have I downplayed Jinnah's relevance to the state of Pakistan - how is such a thing possible? I've simply outlined the facts that support the original tweet if you bother to read post number 1.

The Turkish minister spoke of Pakistanis. His statement was accurate. To this day, we (and some Indian Muslims) support Turkey as this was a natural continuity of the sentiments of the Muslim League's members (notwithstanding Jinnah and secularist members). Meanwhile India's non-Muslim population cries daily over Ertugrul. Go figure.

Since you brought up Jinnah, though he didn't wholly support khilafat, he was a big fan of the successor state of the Ottoman empire - that of Ataturk. Jinnah literally called him one of the greatest men who ever lived.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.tr...-turkey-s-founding-leader-in-ankara-23088/amp

Here's the final kicker for you. While Gandhi's supposed admiration for khilafat movement was a mere manipulation designed to polarise religious vs secular sentiments among Indian Muslims (and thus weaken or even divide Jinnah's support base), the love of subcontinental Muslims for (a) khilafat movement, (b) the ottomans during their desperate last days and (c) the new secular Turkish state all in continuity was born of a genuine brotherhood, respect and admiration.

. . .
During Gaddafi's rule thousands of Pakistanis worked in Libya. Many Pakistani medics also worked there helping Libyans. This stupid Retard indian General should seek justice for the Bopal disaster!

Fact Check:

Pakistanis did not support Khilafat Movement.

Only Indians supported the Khilafat Movement.
Muslims from today's regions of Pakistan refused to fight against the Turk's. Many of them were executed by the British for treason.

.
So the summary is khilfat movement leaders became leaders of Muslim League. Rest is just goal post shifting BS revisionist history by our resident crazies. The same type you will find on the internet that claim that some dude named vikramaditya conquered Arabia and made hindu temples in Mecca.
