Why should the Chinese military "gift" items to Pakistan? Even the closest US allies have to spend money on military equipment ... one does not simply gift expensive items.Turn arms sales in to military aid. A modest amount of military aid in equipment not cash will go along way to shoring up Pakistan’s defenses. Perhaps this is happening already, but expanding it to the point where the balance of power is maintained at such a level in the region, that India is bogged down dealing with Pakistan that it can’t think about dealing with China.
For example; Leasing a few SSNs to expand the reach of the PN and gifting the PN a couple of squadrons of J-15s should change the entire dynamic of the naval conflict. The IN and IAF would have to dedicate such a substantial amount more to deal with this threat that it would force them to stay in the Indian Ocean, and that too in more of a defensive posture.
Furthermore, considering the danger of Indian attack upon Pakistan, should any conflict occur it would boost the prestige of the Chinese arms industry if Pakistan demonstrates the prowess of these weapons in a decisive manner. The use of the JF-17 and the F-16 during the 2019 air skirmish boosted the prestige of these two platforms and probably contributed to arms sales.
For the Air Force, the Chinese could gift 6 squadrons of J-10CE over a 10 year period, and allow the PAF to retire the Mirages. For the Army, Chinese made MRAPs, IFVs, and Tanks gifted to rebuild the bulk of the army over a 10 year period will force the Indians to keep its army on its western border and away from Chinese positions along the LAC.
Secondly, Changing some of the CPEC loans into grants would help ease the repayment burden, or conversely, helping Pakistan boost exports with help in management and investment in modern machinery will help boost Pakistan value (higher GDP ; a growing market worth not offending) to Foreign governments to counter balance India’s economic clout.
