Major gas find could reunite Cyprus - or spur conflict with Turkey

.
This is probably linked to the article I posted last week.

A "huge" gas field appears to have been found in Cyprus

Given the location of the find, I don't think that this would help de-escalating the situation. It is a major find for the Republic of Cyprus, and on a packet where US interests are aligned with them (and no interference from third actors is possible, unlike what happened last year with the Italian company).

Turkey is bound to react to something like this.

anyone got a map showing where in the sea it is ?

Plot 10 in the map below.

Personally I don't care if the greek cypriots gets that and blah blah blah. In exchange Turkish Cypriots should be recognized as a sovereign country, and become part of EU.

recognized as a sovereign country, and become part of EU

:omghaha:

before that happens turkey will be part of eu and will get the majority of seats.. yes you dont belive that .. but it should be crystal clear that eu will never take them as sovereign and specially not as part of eu as long as they are turkish..

All Cypriot Turks residing in Northern Cyprus as well as a big chunk of the diaspora would probably become EU citizens automatically if/when Cyprus is united again. Cyprus is already part of the European Union.

Sadly, I don't see this happening any time soon with the current status quo in the region.

Well, Turkey should have objected to Cyprus membership back when they had the chance. One criteria for membership of EU is that the candidate country can't have a conflict with neighbouring countries. But They let that train go by. (of course that is assuming that I remember correctly).

The result is we're stuck in this spiral that won't have an end until at least 100 years have passed and all survivers are long dead and no one is interested in dragging the inevitable separation on, and just accepts just like sudan, that there are two countries on that isle.

Why didn't you agree on Kofi Annan Plan?

Why didn't you agree on Kofi Annan Plan?

Greece was supportive of the process, but had no say for the matter at hand.

I think that you know pretty well why the Greek Cypriots voted down Annan V. By the time the plan got to the refferendum process, it had significantly morphed from Annan II and all 11 major Turkish demands were met. Turkey had not only once again been given the right of unilateral military intervention, but would be allowed to keep a large number of troops in Cyprus after a settlement, whereas the National Guard was to be dissolved.

There is no way that a Greek Cypriot that lived through the invasion would vote for something like that.

My personal opinion is different though. I think that Annan V was a mildly bad plan and far from an objective compromise, but it was also the last chance both communities had at reaching a palpable compromise. As time moves on and the landscape and status quo on the island changes, it is becoming much more difficult to solve the dispute.

I think it will probably be decades, long after all people that experienced 1974 are dead before there is another good chance at re-unification. And that is in my honest opinion a disaster, for both communities.

Like I said, accepting the separation is the best solution. International recognition and ending the isolation of N.Cyprus would definitely boost the entire economy and growth. IMO I think Turkey should work towards more direct interaction with N.Cyprus with international countries who're willing to improve relations furter.
